3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Thorpe429 (3542) - Alexandria, Virginia, USA - SEP 16, 2011
From the bottle at De Kelk in Brugge during last week’s trip to Belgium. Reviewed from notes.
Serve in a McChouffe chalice.
Pours dark brown with a nice, foamy light tan head. Good retention and plenty of lacing.
Nose brings loads of dark fruits and a bit of sweetness. Flavor falls along the same lines, though the two don’t mix quite as well as in the nose. Medium body and good carbonation. Semi-dry finish. Well made and quite tasty.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Elwood (1834) - Between a rock and a hard place, Virginia, USA - MAY 16, 2010
Serving: 750 ml bottle from Paeonian Grocery.
It pours a deep mahogany color with a small, resilient, off-white head. The nose is malty with a bit of earth, spice, and caramel. The flavor has notes of toasted malt, dark caramel, a bit of dust, peat, and earth. Slightly sweet but dry. Medium body with high, aggressive carbonation and a short finish. A nice spicy scotch ale that does a good job blending the best of the Belgian and Scotch worlds.

Bottle. Pours a dark ruby reddish color with a off white head. Aroma is of toasted malt, dark fruits, dark bread, subtle spice, caramel and sugary notes. The flavor follows the nose with lots of dark fruit like raisins and figs, dark bread, caramel, subtle spice, brown sugar, toasted malt and a light phenol note. The body is medium with a dry mouthfeel. Overall a really nice interpretation of a Scotch Ale, I’m starting to dig d’Achouffe.

3.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 MMR (178) - NETHERLANDS - JUL 22, 2011
Malty, toasty and also a rather caramel taste. A very well dark red-brown variant of the original La Chouffe with a very good and sweet taste. It’s color is very nice but the foam rather week. Overall pretty good beer.

slightly malt/caramel, very spicy, brown with red gleams, tan foam, full body, average carbonation, long finish,
Draft. A complex assembly of spices. Stay a long time in palate. Pleasant, perhaps a bit too hard.
