UPDATED: MAY 7, 2009 Nose of thick spices and sugar cane and that wonderfully dry and spritey Achouffe yeast. Flavor is lots of oranges drowned out by sugar and spice. Tastes like a standard Belgian strong. Very nice ale, another good one from Achouffe.

750ml bottle, best by end of 2011. Served at around 65F.
A bit of a gusher upon opening, pours dark brown with red highlights and a fair bit of sediment. Initial two finger foamy, rocky head that diminishes to a foamy ring and light cap and leaves some nice lacing.
Aroma is very much that of a Belgian Strong Dark Ale, Belgian yeast, candi sugar, dark fruits, dark breads, some alcohol, and perhaps a hint of peat. Very good strength and probably my favorite part of the beer.
Flavor is dark fruits, cherries, raisins, figs, candi/brown sugar, Belgian yeast, toast & bread, some caramel and toffee, moderate sweetness, within range for the style, a bit of alcohol on the finish despite being only 8% and having some age under its belt...less so as I work my way through the bottle.
Mouthfeel is light/medium bodied with strong scrubbing carbonation.
More Belgian than Scotch but never-the-less a very tasty brew. This has been on my to-do list for quite a while so I’m glad to finally have gotten around to trying it.

UPDATED: SEP 14, 2008 750 ml that says 8.0% abv. Nearly opaque chestnut, with a lasting one-finger cap of sugary foam. Nice mix of sugary frosting and soapy lacing on the glass. Spicy apple and toffee aroma later gives way to some smoky cabbage. Flavors of caramel, apple, raisin, with finishing touches of earthy smoke, alcohol and cocoa for a delicate balance. Almost-medium body is slightly watery but finishes nicely dry with some alcohol warmth.

750ml bottle. ruby brown pour with little floaties visible at the bottom of the glass where the light comes through. huge off white head with spotty soapy lacing. aroma was muted musty smells of raisins, caramel and cocoa. biscuit malts, dark fruits and light spices in the taste. texture was thinner than I expected for some reason. just wanted it to be a little more chewy. noticed butterscotch and nuts in the taste as well. definitely lots of subtle stuff going on here.
