2.9 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
Sweet malty nose. Very dark colour. Heavy sweet malt taste up front. Sharp alcohol taste intrudes on heavy bready sweetness. Finish turns quite dark and heavy. Much heavier than I expected for the style.

UPDATED: FEB 1, 2015 Descent Scotch ale. Liked it better than Simple Malt’s Wee Heavy. Not overly remarkable thought.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Aroma is roasty malts, caramel and oak cask. Taste is a rich sweet maltiness, light clove, rye and sweet oak. A tad of bitterness on the tip with light clove. Appearance is a clear amber with a thin pearl head that retains poorly.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
341ml bottle. Pours a clear dark garnet with a thin mocha head that diminishes quickly. On the nose, dark dried fruits take the spotlight with an odd minimal smell of artificial grape flavouring, and some domestic-like notes. As for taste, burnt sugar out of the gates with raisin, toffee, and light earthy notes that lead into lightly fruity burnt sugar meets molasses like notes with some citrus peel in the finish.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
341ml bottle (last bottle at the restaurant) served in its own custom tulip glass around 6 degrees:
Pours a clear dark cherry wood with fiery ruby highlights topped by a finger of tanned foam. Lacing is rough and retention is low since the head shrinks to form a thick ring around the rim of the glass.
The nose has a strong coffee attack decomposable into roasted malts, caramel (wee burnt), a touch of vanilla and a sting from the hops.
The taste is very interesting with a sweet malty attack quickly expanding to huge hops delivering a great bitterness. This lets loose nice notes of espresso and leading the way to medium hoppy/vapory finish.
Mouthfeel is clear, a bit oily but the ale is undoubtly robust and full-bodied.
Overall this is a good scotch ale with a good bitter backbone. It could be mistaken for a mild Imperial Russian Stout but its a great winter ale.

En fût. Couleur acajou foncée trouble, mousse beige crémeuse laissant une belle dentelle. Arôme de caramel, malt caramélisé, raisin, touche d’alcool. Goût de malt caramélisé, caramel, sucre d’érable, légère amertume. Carbonatation moyenne, corps moyen.

3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
330ml into a tumbler. Pours a deep ruby-red with minimal head. Malty nose with a bit of vanilla, butterscotch, and light smokiness. A bit tart, with a little caramel; a bit boozy. Medium bodied. Warming.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
A beautiful beer, a dusky rusty colour with a creamy light tan head. Sweet notes of caramel, raisin pudding, vanilla and toasty malts get on gregariously with subtle hints of leather, smoke and an earthy bitterness. Bittersweetness veering towards the sweeter side of things, this Scotsman has a lightly oily medium body with soft carbonation. Very tasty stuff here, dangerous too since you can’t taste the booze and it is rather mighty. Great stuff.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
This is top notch stuff. Pour is reddish brown with a bit of tan cap. Nose is roasted nuts and grain, butterscotch, vanilla and some nice booziness. Taste follows almost to a T, though it’s surprisingly light and not overly sweet (can’t decide if that’s a complaint or not). There’s also that familiar St ambroise spiciness that seems to show up in all their beers. Overall this is good stuff
