McAuslan Scotch Ale is dark ruby red with a tawny head– sweet and malty, with hints of vanilla and butterscotch, and a long hop finish. With 7.2% alcohol, it is the ideal beer to fend off winter chills, but its full flavour makes it a favourite all year round.

After a few years off the market, this scotch ale was reinstated in the McAuslan lineup in late 2005.

11.5 oz bottle from the LCBO, served in a branded stem glass. Pours clear mahogany with a tall, dense tan head. The head fades slowly and leaves a small amount of fine lace. On the nose, there are notes of molasses, roasted malts, raisins, dark fruit and vanilla, along with hints of earth and hops. The flavour is moderately sweet throughout, but it develops a balancing spicy bitter hop note through the middle. The finish is long and malty with hints of pepper and spice. On the palate, it is medium in body with a milky texture and average carbonation. Overall, this is a decent Scotch ale. It is hoppier than I had expected, but it has a nice toasty malt character. A very tasty brew; I wish this were available more often. 2012-01-18

---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

This scotch ale smell is close to burned caramel. The dark ruby look is appealing. The taste is close to resin and burnt caramel. Nice to drink with the sunset. Cheers!

UPDATED: FEB 1, 2015 Descent Scotch ale. Liked it better than Simple Malt’s Wee Heavy. Not overly remarkable thought.

Aroma is roasty malts, caramel and oak cask. Taste is a rich sweet maltiness, light clove, rye and sweet oak. A tad of bitterness on the tip with light clove. Appearance is a clear amber with a thin pearl head that retains poorly.

341ml bottle. Pours a clear dark garnet with a thin mocha head that diminishes quickly. On the nose, dark dried fruits take the spotlight with an odd minimal smell of artificial grape flavouring, and some domestic-like notes. As for taste, burnt sugar out of the gates with raisin, toffee, and light earthy notes that lead into lightly fruity burnt sugar meets molasses like notes with some citrus peel in the finish.

341ml bottle (last bottle at the restaurant) served in its own custom tulip glass around 6 degrees: Pours a clear dark cherry wood with fiery ruby highlights topped by a finger of tanned foam. Lacing is rough and retention is low since the head shrinks to form a thick ring around the rim of the glass. The nose has a strong coffee attack decomposable into roasted malts, caramel (wee burnt), a touch of vanilla and a sting from the hops. The taste is very interesting with a sweet malty attack quickly expanding to huge hops delivering a great bitterness. This lets loose nice notes of espresso and leading the way to medium hoppy/vapory finish. Mouthfeel is clear, a bit oily but the ale is undoubtly robust and full-bodied. Overall this is a good scotch ale with a good bitter backbone. It could be mistaken for a mild Imperial Russian Stout but its a great winter ale.
