Our artisan in charge created the Stoke Bomber Bohemian Ale to straddle the ale/lager debate perfectly. Everyone will enjoy the interaction of wheat and lightly roasted barley with the lively citrus and pepper flavours. The ale team will promote its rich golden hue, fully rounded mouthfeel and engaging honeyed malt complexity. The lager camp will insist that the spicy hop emphasis is classic Bohemian. Which side are you on?

Bottled. A golden beer with a beige head. The aroma has notes of fruits, malt, and caramel. The flavor is sweet with notes of lemons, hops, malt, and caramel, leading to a bitter finish. Nice, but not Bohemian.

Bottle recommended by Eric at CK, thank you sir! "Try the Stroke beer" he said. Hazy golden yellow color, fluffy white head, solid lacing. Aroma of peppery and dusty lemons and straw. Taste is peppery lemons and cigars. Decent.

bottle. recent import by Shelton Brothers. opaque dull amber body with a small white head, some lacing. underfermented raw wort nose of Cracklin’ Oat Bran cereal and dry dog food and creamed wheat and crystal malt, so bad that the enjoyable bright citrus and tropical fruit hops can’t save it. goopy, sludgy, thick and chewy body with a lot of unfermented sugar; add strongly bitter high acid hop and it’s very stew-like and raw tasting. if they could ferment this out and maybe filter it a little, I can see where it could be and it would be beautiful. maybe this batch is a dud though, I can’t imagine Shelton Brother bringing this in if this is the intended smell, flavor and mouthfeel.

650ml bottle. Pours a strong sunshine orange colour with an even layer of white fam. Looks pretty good in the glass. Malty aroma is pleasing as is the flavour. This is a good session beer.

Bottle. Gold with an inch of white head. Aroma of hay, toast, honey, very rip gooseberries, mixed citrus zest. High bead, slightly creamy mouthfeel. Taste is sweet and fruity with berries and light bread, then ctirus and pepper. Bitter finish with some spices. A fatter Kölsch with Kiwi hops is I guess what they say you’ll get and you do. A little leaner would suit me better, but it’s pretty gluggable.

The head is ok, the body gold. It smells malty, hoppy, citrus. The taste is hoppy, malty, aromatic, fruity-citrus. Nice 3.5

High expectations lead to a greater distance to fall. ’Bohemian’ and ’ale’ gave me hopes of a rustic, dark ale, raw, full and tasty. This one...., well!
Orange gold, vibrant, radiant and just shy of bright. Head is ill to form resulting in a flaccid soapy white mess that manages a little lace. Metallic, rough, weedy hop nose, quite vegetal, dank and tinny; what the!?
Light, sweet, fruit sugar and citric front, metallic and drabby from there on. Watery, thin and soapy mouthfeel; I’m concerned McCashin have bottled an Aussie macro without realising, this is unexpectedly bad. Hops are stale, there is a vegetal note that lingers with its dowdy tinniness. If Bohemia is a suburb bridging the Yarra in Victoria then this is dead spits, but a disappointing ale no doubt from an otherwise great brewer from NZ. BIG ? (65cL, no date stamp, Dan Murphy’s Currambine)

Bottle. I thought this a little flabby. Aiming for drinkability, but just needs a little more challenge.

Apparently I call this an ale at my peril. I have never known a lager to have wheat malt, but I’m happy to be proven wrong (with accompanying liquid proof). Golden colour with a fulsome white head that is creamy and looks like it should be scooped off with a spoon. Aromas are of uncut grass, citrus (grapefruit and kumquat) and smell really good. Cool at first and then more grapefruit, grapefruit and then grapefruit. Possibly gooseberry and grapefruit and then grapefruit. Having thought about it while the bitterness grabs the sides of my tongue with grapefruit-like tartness, there is a lingering grapefruit flavour that sits side by side with grapefruit. Okay, so there’s a bit of grapefruit, but joking aside there’s also lemon meringue and quite tasty grapefruit. I’m not taking the piss, I’d quite happily recommend this beer and buy myself another.
