3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draft at the Foundry, which is the back bar of the McCoy’s Brewpub in Kansas City, Missouri. Tried a full pour of the tap version, and a taster of the Cask. Pour is brown ruby, with a smallish off white head. Aroma of peaty sweet maltiness. Nice, pure nose, very clean. Taste is more of malt and peat, really nice - smooth and smoky. Really flavorful scotch.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
On tap at the brewpub. Pours a deeper brown-amber colored body with an inch thick, dense and creamy, tan head that dissipates slowly and leaves a moderate lacing. Aroma is some sweet malts with a nice, peaty earth. Some caramel and toffee with a light, clean smoke and some fruity esters. Flavor is similar and more pronounced. Solid malt backing with a medium sweetness and a nice caramel-toffee. Plenty of earthy peat and balanced smoke blends well with the malts as well as a solid, yeasty, fruity ester. Finishes with more malt and peat and the slightest roast hint that gives off a light, earthy bitterness with some fruit creeping in as well. Lengthy aftertaste following a medium-full, soft body and a light, creamy carbonation. Overall, a very nice, impressive scotch ale from a brewpub. Tons of balanced flavor and easy drinking. Very enjoyable.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
on tap at brewpub Good coloring. Not sweet at all. A definite spike in the bittering, doughy, peaty, quick crisp finish, although some tannic qualities linger on. Not ale-y enough, but well-balanced and very drinkable., I expected it to get a little bit more caramel as it warmed, but it didn’t. This almost reminds me of an alt. Good, drinkable, but just mildly Scottish

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Fruity, malty aroma, some banana/bubblegum esters and caramel/toffee sweetness. Deep, dark mahogany color, very still and lacking a head. Malty, very lightly roasty and grainy flavor, some syrupy, toffeeish sweetness and barely discernible hop bitterness followed by a burst of yeast fruitiness in the finish, some muted spices here as well. Just a little cloying, and with a thick, flat, syrupy mouthfeel. Aftertaste is quite sugary. I'm glad to see something like a Strong Scotch style from a local brewpub, and I woud say that is is indeed worth trying but I didn't find this example to be outstanding. I would prefer something to balance out the sweetness, such as peat smokiness or hops, or both. This beer would also easily fit the Old Ale profile, as typified by Old Peculier.

Very dark brown ale served in an appropriate tulip snifter. Very little head. Roast malt aroma. Very warm malt flavors with hints of nut and spices. Warm, somewhat sweet alcohol finish. A really, really nice Scotch ale.
