Cask: Regular.
Also known as Younger’s IPA.
Withdrawn in 2007 but reappeared as a monthly special in June 2011.
Originally brewed by McEwan’s at the Fountain brewery in Edinburgh. Production moved from Fountain to the Caledonian Brewery in 2004. The McEwan’s brand passed to Heineken in 2008 after their purchase of Scottish & Newcastle’s British operations. Heineken sold the brand to Wells & Youngs in 2011. Draught (cask & keg) McEwan’s beers are produced under contract for Wells & Youngs at Caledonian.

Brown colour, with a white head. Good texture. Flavour is OK, a bit malty, hoppy, sweet, salty. Not that exciting.

Cask conditioned at The National Hotel, Dingwall, Ross & Cromarty, Scotland. Amber to copper with slight head. This had a soggy cardboard note developing into metallic, possibly a kegged beer pulled through a hand pump. Flat, not great.

Fat.

On tap @ McDaniels, Dundee. Pours dark amber with a nicely proportioned head. The nose has malt, biscuits and a touch of toffee. The palate is similar, though a little too drying on the end. The palate is medium bodied and textured with a dry but slightly astringent finish. Overall, better than I remember.

A nice-looking pint that was a bit more tangy and sweet than I’d choose to drink, but that’s personal taste rather than a problem with the beer. Not over-powering, just a strong taste. Doesn’t do much palate-wise and I didn’t get much of an aroma either.

First tasted this in the Argyle Bar, Paisley in September 1981. Cask, handpump dispense. Clear pale amber in colour with a thick creamy white head. Faint whiff of digestive biscuit in the short malty aroma. Creamy thin mouthfeel and good lacing. Pale malts give a smokey nicotine flavour through the base - or was it actually from the large number of smokers adding to the grey haze in the bar? Robust malty biscuit base with hints of caramel. Hop resins add a weak bitter note to the creamy aftertaste. Finish is bitter sweet edging towards the malt end of the spectrum. An ok Scottish 80/ but at the time other breweries had better versions of 80/ ie Belhaven, Caledonian & Maclays.
