Originally brewed by McEwan’s at the Fountain brewery in Edinburgh. Production moved from Fountain to the Caledonian Brewery in 2004. The McEwan’s brand passed to Heineken in 2008 after their purchase of Scottish & Newcastle’s British operations. Heineken sold the brand to Wells & Youngs in 2011. Draught (cask & keg) McEwan’s beers are produced under contract for Wells & Youngs at Caledonian. Packaged (bottle & can) beers are produced at Wells & Youngs brewery in Bedford.

Towey1989 (718) - Stoke On Trent, Staffordshire, ENGLAND - JUN 30, 2015
Keg at The Black Swan, Leek. A clear golden colour with a thin white head. Very faint aroma of grain, subtle lemon and some grassy hops. Taste of grain, mineral and some cardboard. Light bodied and a fizzy carbonation. A slight, grainy bitterness in the finish. Tasteless, boring and weak as hell. Avoid.

Keg tap at the Caledonian, Carlisle. £1.40 per pint during happy hour so what the hell, at that price it falls under ’it’d be rude not to’ territory. Slightly darker than your average lager, with intense forced carbonation. Grainy aroma, simple and quite bland but not offensive. Hint of astringency. Taste is imbued with that unfortunate cardboard note prevalent in so many lagers. Drinkable but uninteresting to the core.

Iznogud (1549) - CROATIA - NOV 13, 2014
Draught at Opium, Edinburgh. Pours clear golden with thin white head. Malty, grainy, corny. This one is just bad, barely drinkable after all those nice beer at the Scotland trip.

Alengrin (3368) - BELGIUM - AUG 24, 2014
Tasted from draught. Very bland, neutral, soft and thinnish lager without noteworthy hop character. It’s easy to understand why English lagers have a poor reputation if this is to be considered a typical example... I never understood their popularity anyway, considering the rich world of English ales.

UPDATED: APR 13, 2014 Quite undistinguished lager without any personal taste or identity. Thirst quencher.

Can. This is another variety of water beer that is great with a curry at 2 am.

Pale yellow with a good carbonation. Ordinary lager with a fair nose. Fairly easy to drink.

jamestulloch (2204) - Edinburgh, SCOTLAND - APR 1, 2013
UPDATED: DEC 4, 2014 Keg. Clear golden body with a thin white head. Lively carbonation. Faint lacing. Almost no aroma - hints of grain and metal. Flavour of corn, straw and grain. Thin body with a watery texture. Fizzy carbonation. Not a great beer - no flavour, complexity or body. Tastes more or less the same as other macro-brewed lagers.

Used to be popular but much less so today. Unpleasant taste; neutral aroma; may help to clear the palate in the presence of curry (but then so don’t most lagers?). Nothing to justify its’ consumption.
