Deep brown colour. A chocolate and caramel body with a lingering sweet finish.
Originally brewed by McEwan’s at the Fountain brewery in Edinburgh. Production moved from Fountain to the Caledonian Brewery in 2004. The McEwan’s brand passed to Heineken in 2008 after their purchase of Scottish & Newcastle’s British operations. Heineken sold the brand to Wells & Youngs in 2011. Packaged (bottle & can) McEwan’s beers are produced at Wells & Youngs brewery in Bedford.

Bottle 330ml. Deep amber with big frothy beige head. Aroma of prune, dried fruits and chocolate. The flavor has notes of prune, dried fruits and hint of soy sauce and coffee, sourish, a bit alcoholic, semi-dry. Medium to full-bodied. Nice.

Pours a rusty red color with nice lacing and excellent head retention. Has an aroma of tart cherries and malt. Tastes slightly fruity, very malty and has a finishing cocoa touch. A pretty nice drink here!

Excellent, smooth and malty. Deep and honest. Old world quality. It never seems too sweet. The 8% stays very well hidden throughout the entire session.

Pours a dark ruby red with virtually no head. Aroma notes include fig, plum, raisin, fiery malts, and booze. Tasting notes include fig, dates, plums, rich malts, brown sugar, and finishes on a spicy note. The mouth feel is warming, and slightly boozy. Not bad!

Poured from bottle into a pint glass Appearance – The beer pours a deep mahogany amber color with a one finger head of thick white foam. The head has a decent level of retention, slowly fading over time to leave a decent sum of lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma of the brew is rather strong of a caramel smell mixed with a big brown sugar and dark fruit aroma of raisin, cherry, and prune. Along with these smells comes some nice aromas of warming alcohol and a little bit of a bready and slightly oaky aroma. A rather nice smell overall. Taste – The taste begins with a rather thick bready taste with a bit of a fruit flavor that consists of raisin, plum, and cherry. Upfront there is also some light caramel and brown sugar which grow stronger as the taste advances. While the booziness is very light upfront, it grows stronger as the taste advances, bringing on a nice warming taste more toward the end. With more fruit and a little bit of grain mixing in with the booze and fruit, one is left with a warming dark fruit taste to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is moderately thick and heavy with a carbonation level that is on the lower side. For the rich, malty, and sweet flavors of the brew the feel is rather well done and makes for a rich slow sipper as a scotch at 8 % should be. Overall- Not a bad more heavy hitting scotch brew with a good blend of an alcohol burn (which I think a strong scotch should have) with a somewhat sweet and malty flavor.

Kita (1898) - Koper, SLOVENIA - AUG 31, 2015
Bottle, 0.33l. Cloudy dark brown color with thin creamy tan-like head and average sparkling appearance. Aroma of caramel, mild roasted malt, dried fruits, scotch and vanilla. Taste starts with moderate sweet toasted malt and chocolate, follows by dried fruits sweetness and mild acidity, mouthfeel is warming alcoholic, while finish is mild bitter. Medium to full body, sticky texture and average carbonation in palate. Strong, sweet and that’s pretty much all of it...

This beer had quote the journey to where it is brewed now. Hopefully the recipe hasn’t changed with it. It’s an inexpensive bottle of 8% alcohol Scotch Ale. It’s sweet, almost fruity, and doesn’t have the typical Scotch "band-aid" flavor.
