4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Pigfoot (2267) - Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - SEP 14, 2004
This is the beer whose yeast was dissected by the brewers at Moortgat, as they invented Duvel. Big, tan head, dark color. Strong aromatics, rich notes of toffee, cocoa, butterscotch, nuts. Soft on the palate, leading to a remarkably chewy testure. Thick chocolate notes coming in now, riding on through the finish. Solid malt, low hops, very easy-drinking and rewarding with every little sip.
This would be excellent with rich, hearty, spicy food. Classic!

Pours deep burnt orange with thin head. Nose is of sweet malt and mild scotch. Flavors run of roasted carmel and light smokiness. Finishes clean, light, and fruity.

Bottle. Clear ruby brown color with a thin tan head. Consistent ring of lace all the way down. Very malty aroma- caramel and butterscotch and scorched toffee. Sweet with a fairly rich mouthfeel, although not nearly as rich as it looks, and a little alcohol bite and warmth. Fruity flavors, yet fairly clean with no lingering aftertaste. No hop flavors noticeable. A beer for any malthead to enjoy sipping slowly and savoring the warmth. Not very complex and not something I would seek out too often. Bring me Traquair.
4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 igel (196) - New Mexico, USA - SEP 2, 2004
Pours a deep red with a tan head and a sticky lace. The head died early. The aroma is rich and malty--thick with caramel. Taste is sweet and of roasted malt with a good representation of a mid section and a dry finish. Many wine qualities. Mouth feel is smooth and creamy with low carbonation and a biting end. This is not a complex beer, but it has a pretty good balance and is quite drinkable for a strong ale.

Poured ruby brown with thin head...smells malty and alcohol...also candy sugar?...tastes quite bland, but quite sweet...gets more syrupy as it warms...finish thick and alcohol...

Pours a clear reddish brown with barely no head. Aroma is of scotch, sweet malt and peat. Taste is very sweet/syrupy and malty with plenty of dark fruits, raisans, caramel, brown sugar/molasses and smoke. Mouthfeel starts out full but gets thin and a tad watery. Alcohol content very well hidden. Good brew but this was too sweet for me. I couldn’t drink more than one of these at a time.

Bottled. Dark reddish amber liquid, clear but dark enough to almost be opaque. Small head and no lacing. Fruity aroma, caramel, some alcohol. Full body and lots of soft, dry carbonation. Dominated by malts, fruity flavor, prune and apple, caramel and a light bitter finish. Nice beer, very fruity, drinkable and well hidden alcohol @8%.

My first Scotch ale. Not too far from an ESB or dark lager. Very dark brown appearance, with little head. Decent malty, alcohol aroma. Flavor was pretty good. Not too overpowering. Good malty, sweet caramel, alcohol taste.
