Opened the doors of good beer for me a few years ago...The first wooden one yielded burnt caramel and chocolate in a lascive embrace...A second door shed new light on how sweet cereal and hot cherries could mingle...The key to these worlds was, and still is, curiosity...

Lots of alcohol. Beats your run-of-the-mill beer and Ok in a session. Some syrup sweetness or medicinal and carbonation like your no-name micro on-tap. A subtle nutty plumness. Pleasant tan color and head.

Ruby/deep brown pour with aroma of roast malt, nuts, toffee, caramel. Tastes like it smells, with some rauchy and peaty finishing elements. Nice complexity and balance.

Bottle poured a clear dark brown with a lasting tan head. Aromas of light smoke, carmel and some hints of fruitiness. Palate was light bodied and slightly tart. Flavors of light smoke, carmel, toffee and a bit of grape with a smooth finish.

UPDATED: MAR 6, 2004 Dark brown, it smells the dessert. Caramel as it enters the mouth, it then seems to vary through a rather complex mixture of different toffee tastes, burnt, pudding, caramel creme until a slight bitterness joins the fest. The aftertaste is full of memories.

Bottle at The Pub. Brown pour, small tan head. Aroma is sweet and malty. Flavor follows suit. Just a tad too sweet and too malty. Not enough balance. Smooth mouthfeel, but just not quite right.

Bottled. Poured clear, deeper brown with a creamy cap of beige head. The aroma picked up sweet, toasty caramel notes accented by smoked peat.. a hint of earthy hoppage rounded it out nicely. The flavor was a touch too sweet for me, but it still held together nicely.. caramel and light chocolate at the core with plenty of sweet smoked peat, earthy, and floral bitterness surrounding.. tasty. Medium-bodied on the palate with lower carbonation.. prickly at times which impeded the flow a bit. All in all this was a very enjoyable drink!

No#65.(1980 something, i think 1984, but not sure). I love these scotch ales from belgium, never mind when they are aged for 20 or so years. Aroma is deeply aged oaky goodness. Taste is sweet oaked malty bad boy, what a beer, never expecte dsuch a thing from a scotish brewer, hence why it was or is made in belgium.
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 jerc (5591) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - SEP 18, 2003
Pours darkest ruby, with a good size beige head that dissipates to a smallish head with some nice lacing. Sweet alcoholic aroma is malty and slighty caramel or toffeeish. Flavour is very sweet and malty with an undertone of alcohol. Notes of caramel again in the flavour, or some other “ice cream sundae” flavour… Nice mouthfeel at first gets watery near the end. Despite slight alcohol notes at times, the alcohol is remarkably well hidden.
