Deep brown colour. A chocolate and caramel body with a lingering sweet finish.
Originally brewed by McEwan’s at the Fountain brewery in Edinburgh. Production moved from Fountain to the Caledonian Brewery in 2004. The McEwan’s brand passed to Heineken in 2008 after their purchase of Scottish & Newcastle’s British operations. Heineken sold the brand to Wells & Youngs in 2011. Packaged (bottle & can) McEwan’s beers are produced at Wells & Youngs brewery in Bedford.

Pretty good scotch... Not my favorite, but pretty good. Fairly sour and dry, malty and dark.

Hazy dark brown color with a copper hue and a very weak head. Flavors of alcohol, dark malts, toffee, faint nuts and lemon, lots of herbal spices. Sweet smell but more of a bitter taste. Feels more like a stout/porter. Dominant alcohol feel. Creamy medium body with moderate carbonation. Strong finish that lingers for a moment with dry bitter spices, and a bit earthy. A little stale and not really balanced. Lacks some quality, overall above average stuff.

Dark brown color, clear, deep red hue, thick stable beige head. Aroma of roasted malts, cake, plum/cherry, caramel/sugar, solvent. Light bittering hops, resin. Taste is sweetish, sticky with a mild bitterness, relatively complex. Medium to full body, slow sipper, light warming. Creamy texture, smooth alcoholic finish.

Nothing like a good Scotch Ale, even in the summertime. McEwan’s Scotch Ale has a mahogany pour and an eggshell head. Toffee, light hops, and mild fruit aromas. Caramel and chocolate flavor profile. Smooth feel. While a richer flavor and fuller feel would be welcome, it’s impossible to deny how tasty and drinkable this is. Great example of Scotch Ale.

Bottle. Dark brown beer, small tan head. Nose is mild caramel, some minerals, burned notes, dried fruit and roasted malt. Flavor is roasty, somewhat acidic, dried fruit. Bread crust acidity in the finish with more fruity notes. Smooth stuff, hides the booze rather well.

Bottle from SuperAlko (€ 1.99). BB 01.04.2017. Pours brown, seems clear, with a small, very light beige head. Sweetish sourish herbal and berry aroma with black tea and roasty-toasty hints, lactic even?, very difficult to adequately describe to be honest... Tastes nice. Dark fruits, malts, black tea kind of yeastiness? Slight creaminess on the palate, carbonation soft, body. Easy drinking despite the 8%. Nice, old-school stuff. Worth buying again.

Thick brown and smooth. Easily drinkable. Aroma of plums and caramel. Easily reminiscent of the original I had years ago. A classic.

Dark brown pour with beige head. Caramel/cocoa/roasted malt aromas. Bitter sweet with a hint of alcohol heat. Creamy mouthfeel with lingering bitter sweet aftertaste. Maybe a slight hint of diacytal giving a buttery impression. Really liked this beer.
