sinkhole (117), Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Mar 23, 2007 Updated: Mar 27, 2007 Deep amber colour with good head. Strong armoas of roasted malts with coffee and some fruits as well. Tastes of malts and caramels, with some roasted grains. Enjoyed this beer more by taking small sips rather than large mouthfuls. Could not drink multiples of these in a sitting but sit nice overall.
Guinness4Duff (429), Tallahassee (and Poconos, PA), Florida, USA Jul 19, 2008 Bottle. Dark brown pour with a nice beige head. Has a very nice aroma, smells like a combination of sweet caramel, cherries and cured tobacco leaves. Flavor is much of the same, seet malt with a fruit presence and a nice smoky finish. I just became a big fan of scotch ales. carruthm (316), USA Jul 13, 2008 Will have to re-rate based on the numerous good ratings here and age of my first rating (~2 years ago). But this was not to my liking at all. Poured fine with a dark brown color and the aroma was fine with the malts expected but the taste was just dreadful. Honestly had trouble finishing 12 oz. Might have also had a bad bottle. chocolateyflow (15), Oxford, Mississippi, USA Jul 11, 2008 What a beer! McEwan’s Scotch Ale is delcious and comes highly recommended by me, so you know it must be good! I think that McEwan’s is the Log Cabin syrup of beers. Scratch that, Log Cabin is the McEwan’s of syrups. JonR888710 (1000), Cochabamba, Bolivia Jul 3, 2008 Pours a mahogany black/brown with a light brown head. Smells lightly fresh, some hops and chocolate. Taste is super-sweet, sugary syrup, molasses Burnt flavors, roasted chocolate malt finish the flavor. Tastes like a sherry to me, way too sweet. This could be useful for sipping in 2-3oz portions, but drinking 12 oz is impossible. Terribly unbalanced, sweet beer. Had out of a 12 bottle purchased at Bailey’s Pub in Arlington, VA. joshiez (36), USA Jun 25, 2008 Very enjoyable. I wasn’t sure about this....at first. It pours really dark. I wanted something new, and I knew this would be a darker beer....but it doesn’t fill my mouth like other darks...it almost has a crisp taste...like a lager. Really crisp....Almost carbonated....but very sweet. You can taste and smell a caramel flavor immediately. I didn’t pick up on the chocolate, but there is sweetness here. I’m excited about this....the first glass went down smooth....I can’t wait to tap the other five!!
