3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
330ml (11.2oz) bottle. Pours dark, clear, cola-brown. Aroma of caramel, chocolate, peat. Flavor is chocolate, caramel, peat, roasted grain, with a sweetness that runs from beginning to end. The gold standard of scotch ales. Glad to see it is being distributed again.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
11.7oz bottle poured into a tulip glass. It poured a dark reddish brown colour, near opaque with thin but persistent beige foam. Intensely malty with strong caramel and toffee notes, a little toasty, subtle fruity esters from the exquisite McEwans Scottish ale yeast, the result reminiscent of Boston Brown Bread or holiday fruit cake. A nice bittersweet balance, but virtually no hops aroma. Medium-heavy body, smooth and well-rounded mouthfeel, average carbonation, invisible 8% alcohol, complex long-lasting aftertaste. Perfectly true to style Scotch Ale. Delicious, no wonder it’s a timeless classic.

3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Tasted from draught. Creamy, dark chestnut coloured, chocolatey, fruity Scotch with warming alcohol in the finish and some roasted bitter; bit one-dimensional, but okay. It’s a pity Belgians don’t use the term Scotch anymore, because even though typical for the style, this would come out a bit poorly if compared with the many Scotch-style winter ales still produced here, but not named as such.

330 ml bottle from Oromocto ANBL. Pours a cola-esque dark brown with hints of orange and a modest-sized eggshell-coloured head. Aroma is dark fruit, caramel and chocolate. Flavour is quite rich with ripe dark fruit, toffee, some chocolate and hints of nuts. Lighter body than might be expected. Nice scotch ale.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
The nose started with a fleeting scent of ripened dark fruit, then malt & toast, and a mellow combo of caramel, toffee, and brown sugar sweetness. The taste added a moderate, somewhat lingering, earthy hop bitterness that was nicely tempered by a malt creaminess that also contributed some fullness to the medium+ body

Now she all boils down to personal opinion lads. Greasy? Yes, this beer is oily as they come. Buttery texture like a liquid croissant. I don’t mind a bit o’ the ol’ grease now and then, especially when it’s Scottish grease, which I am told is quite magic. Dark brown with ruby tints, smell of toffee, hay, brown bread and tart cherries. Tastes like a boozey fruitcake that sat on a horse blanket in the hay. Oily and low carbonation.

Pours dark brown. Sugary sweet. Good kick of alcohol there too. Interesting flavours, but it’s too cloying for my taste.

3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
Poured a dark brown with a little off white head. Aroma was of toffee, caramel, honey, and biscuit. Tasted of butterscotch, biscuit, smoke, and booze. Had a slick medium body with a low carbonation and a bitter buttery mouth feel that wasn’t very pleasant. The butter feel was way too strong in this beer.

12oz bottle shared pours a medium to dark brown. Sweet malt aroma blended with some chocolate and hints of caramel. The flavor is quite smooth. Lots of sweet malts and hints of chocolate and toffee. Overall very good scotch ale.
