3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 wunderbier (1434) - Tampere, FINLAND - MAY 5, 2005
Amber to a deep red hue. Tall, frothy, off-white head. Huge butterscotch/diacetyl aroma. Alcohol, banana, pineapple, caramel. Moderately sweet, moderately acidic flavor becomes a lightly sweet, moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Slightly oxidized. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation, moderate alcohol. The bottom line is: too much diacetyl and alcohol.

A generous regular shaped dark beige head covers the dark brown body. Diacetyl comes heavy in the nose leaving most other flavours secondary, yet a sweet touch of white chocolate fights a friendly battle with a considerable roasty fiend all amidst nutty, tobacco and strongly fruity flavours (berries, figs like). Understated yeastiness provides a few minor spice hints and soft, rounded banana esters. Manages to develop a certain dryness in mouth which brings the fruitiness to a further level while the palate is round and well carbonated, with an unfortunate buttery oiliness imparted.

Huge, fruity butterscotch diacetyl aroma is overwhelming. Opaque orange-tan coloured body with low, fine bubbled, tan head that recedes to a lasting cover with good lacing. Fruity, caramel, butterscotch flavour is saturated with diacetyl. Some solventy phenols and acidity emege as it warms. Medium body with moderate to lively, pointy carbonation. Perhaps this is why they stopped bottling. Bottle (trade, May-05) sampled at DenverLogan’s pre-GABF party 2005. Thanks, hopdog!
