3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours a deep dark brown color with mahogany edges and a 1.5 finger mocha head that quickly settles into a thick, lasting ring. Streaks and splotches of soapy lacing left behind.
Slightly smokey roasted malt aroma with a nice balance of sweet and burnt malt notes. Hints of oatmeal, toffee, gourmet espresso bean, toast and nut countered by sweeter chocolate notes. Kind of tame though for the style.
Full bodied with a dry roasted malt presence that’s countered by chocolate malt sweetness. Strong oatmeal character with burnt toast and deeply roasted coffee bean flavor followed by dark chocolate malt, toffee and hazelnut. Subtle lactic presence smoothes things out but it’s pretty dry/roasted and somewhat acrid. Subtle alcohol sweetness towards the finish but there’s little to no heat. Easy to drink but could use a little sweetness. A touch too dry for my preference.
