4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 TheBeerLover (1019) - DC Metro Area, USA - JAN 27, 2006
Black Rabbit is a standard at Edgefield, one I enjoyed pint after pint of in The Little Red Shed, Oregon’s smallest free standing pub, that was once the incinerator for the Poor Farm if you can believe it. This beer is brewed with pale, crystal, chocolate and brown malts, then hopped with Cascade, Tettnager, and Hallertauer hops. At 4.4% abv, it is a wonderful session brew, and a great beer to match with a nice meal.
Black Rabbit Porter pours to a beautiful, deep brown to black color with a tall white head that fades, and a soft to moderate amount of carbonation. The nose on this beer is fantastic with aromas of dark chocolate, mild coffee, and mild citric/grassy hop aroma. The palate is soft and lean on the tongue with lots of good flavors of sweet malt, chocolate, coffee, mild roast, and a hint of nutty malt flavor. Black Rabbit finishes with more chocolate and coffee flavors up front, and ends with enough hop bitterness to take the sweet edge off, but not so much, as the chocolate and coffee flavors linger.
This is an amazingly good beer from just a wonderful place. A trip to any McMenanims’ establishment is a must visit, but a trip to Edgefield is something any lover of beer should do at least once in his or her life time. When and if you go, you will want to drink some Black Rabbit Porter. This beer is a great match from anything from pub grub, to entrees on the Black Rabbit menu, to a rich and delicious desert.

Pitch black with a small light tan head. Smell is like a fresh sticky cinnamon bun. Raisins, some yeast, very sweet. Flavor is nice and sweet too. Cinnamon, cardamom, brown sugar. Very smooth, medium bodied. This was soooo good!

Tap at the Six Arms. Dark brown/black beer with a thin tan head. Strong sweet chocolatey aroma, a hint of dark fruits (prunes) and some soft roastiness. A little bit of herbal chicory-like character as well. Flavour is pretty solid, bitter chocolate, soft chewy palate. Some sweet caramel and toasted malt flavour in the background. Toasted nuttiness as well. Very well constructed porter.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 BückDich (5467) - McCall, Idaho, USA - FEB 3, 2004
Black ruby color with light tan head & lacing. The aroma has lots of smooth milk chocolate & mocha aromas. A dolup of diactyl is present too to give a nice spin on the style. The flavor is lightly sweet and perfectly matched to the medium body. This was definately one of the better beers of the place.

Rich flavors of chocolate, a little sense of there being alcohol here, some Bailey's Irish Cream hidden in there as well. Above average palate. 90% opaque with red hues. Good solid lacing clinging like ice cream to the glass. A curious aggressiveness at the end left a hint of doubt. (on tap at Ringlers/Crystal Ballroom, Portland)

On Tap, Seattle: This was much better than their porter. Nice roasted, choco-coffee flavor with a decent, chewy body to it.

Tasted at the Powerstation at the Edgefield resort. Dark, with a creamy head that laces well down the side. Smoky, coffee smell, with sweet malt as well. Smooth, with a roasted malt, coffee that compliments the sweetness.

Dark brown with mahogany edges. A little head accompanied by lace. Malts are abundant: chocolate, coffee and roasted. Raisins come through a bit as well. Big time chocolate and coffee malts in the flavor accompanied by the roast and raisins. Creamy, medium body with a nice mocha finish.
