Originally created at the Thompson Brewery over 20 years ago on October 15, 1991, and made once a year by all Thompson Brewers to come after that, Black Widow has become an expected and welcome Halloween treat at the Thompson Public House in Salem. This year, however, Black Widow’s web has enveloped the entire company, as every McMenamins brewery made a batch this year. Each deep-black goblet of Black Widow is packed full of the robust notes afforded by generous amounts of black and roast malts and further spirited with ethereal wisps of caramel and licorice. Both substantial and sublime, this elixir is sure to slake the most fiendish of thirsts. Open up a creaking pub door, find a seat with friends and family andnourish your inner ghoul with a brew steeped in tradition and mystery. A good howl at the Cheshire moon couldn’t hurt, either.

Bottle:   Deep brown, burnt brown sugar highlights, thin sudsy tannish head, little lacing.   Soft roasted malt nose, sweet, a little lactose.   Milk Porter?   Smooth on the tongue, roasty, not acrid either.   Better than expected.   Soft dark chocolate, touch of ash.   Soft bitterness start to finish.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate to full.   Not real chewy, but it is very smooth.   Finishes clean, roasty, with soft bakers chocolate and ash, with a light lactose like sweetness.   Better than expected!   Thanks Ron!

Draft. Pours black with a really small tan head. Smells roasty, chocolatey, slightly faint. Tastes a little dirty, but has a really good roast to it, medium bodied and very chocolatey. Slight fruitiness. Good.

Salmoniform (1272) - Sweet Home, Oregon, USA - OCT 25, 2013
Poured from tap to glass. Dark black with thin tan head which quickly dissipated to a narrow ring. Aroma is roast, caramel, coffee, chocolate, licorice. Light-medium body with low carbonation leaves a bit to be desired as far as mouthfeel. Sweet initially rounded out with roast malt astringentness and finishes with a very faint CO2 essence. Toffee, licorice, chocolate, & coffee linger on the palate. Increase the carbonation or the body and this would be a great brew.

Bottle... Poured dark, almost pitch black with a nice forming, frothy, tan head. This was a nice drinking porter. Low roast and on the sweet side. Caramel toasted sweetness, vanilla, bready grains and sweet malts. Hardly any bitterness and low hop presence.
