Firefly Kolsch is truly a summer beer. It is a crisp, thirst-quenching golden ale made as true to this exceptional German style as possible. 100German malts lend a flavorful, yet surprisingly subtle malt profile. Noble hops of the Tettnanger variety deliver a distinct, yet extremely smooth hop character. At McMenamins, we are utilizing a different yeast strain in one of our seasonal brews, a German Kolsch yeast. This yeast has a unique feature; it is a hybrid of ale and lager characteristics. It retains the flavor of an ale but imparts the smoothness of a lager. This yeast is what makes this brew one of the cleanest and most refreshing tasting beers around. Collect Firefly Kolsch in a jar, glass, pint or pitcher at your local McMenamins and add a little brightness and magic to your summer evening. Tasted @ the McMenamins Kennedyschool in Portland.
Cloudy yellow colored brew. Fruity aroma. Malty sweetness. Some fruits and light bitterness. Not really an ordinary kolsch.

Draft at the White Eagle, pours clear yellow with small white head. Sweet aroma of malts and honey, citrusy and slightly peppery aroma. Floral. Flavor is light and malty and pretty sweet for its light color and body, definitely citrusy and maybe a slight hint of anise and hop, no bitterness. Very drinkable but not much to it.

Draught. Poured cloudy yellow with almost no head. Very fruity, spicy aroma, almost like a saison. Sweetish taste, very little bitterness until you get to the finish. Lingering fruity taste, peaches, pears and clove spice.

On tap at the Kennedy School location. Pours a cloudy pale golden color with a thin layer of fizzy white head. Some fruity yeast greets the nose at first, bringing out some aromas of banana and light pear; not the expectation for a kolsh, but pleasant nonetheless. A touch of crisp, lemony, wheaty acidity adds a clean refreshing touch. Light bodied, gently carbonated mouthfeel. Served a bit on the warm side for the style, which perhaps accentuates some of the yeast aromatics noticed. Clean, refreshing lemony wheat flavor with a touch of lavender hops. Finishes dry, with a wave of hop bitterness that has a harsh stalky, stemmy quality and inhibits the drinkability somewhat.

@ Bagdad Theater, Portland (not sure who they’re partnered with). Hazy straw colour. Crisp, herbal hop aroma. The malts are fresh on the palate (bready) as are the hops (earthy, herbal). Well-balanced, as close to authentic Kolsch as I’ve had in the US...though the reference is a bit strange as fireflies (while a summer feature they may be) do not exist west of the Rockies.

Draught at Boon’s Treasury, Salem, OR. Slightly hazy yellow color with white head that laced the glass. Aroma was light citrus hops. This came out again in the flavor along with a fresh cereal grain taste. Light and refreshing.

Had this one over the summer at Ram’s Head. Straight from the farm this one, has some grassy vegetal notes and has the slightest bit of bite upon first sip. It gets pretty basic after that. Easy to drink and makes a great sit out on the porch and drink summertime beer.

On tap at Ram’s Head location in Portland. Somewhat clear golden with a white head. Light grainy aroma with a hint of creamed corn. Moderately sweet. Flavor has notes of grain, corn, light caramel and somef hop bitterness coming in at the end. Medium to light body with medium level of carbonation. Decent easy drinkin’ beer.
