COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
To remind us of warm summer days and happy-go-lucky nights comes our newest bottled beer, Sunflower IPA. In the 1790s, English sailors needed an ale that could withstand the long sea voyage to the colonies in Asia. Knowing that alcohol and hops are natural preservatives, English brewers developed these strong, highly hopped ales known as India Pale Ales. McMenamins Sunflower IPA was first introduced in the summer of 1995 at our West Linn brewery. Inspired by the bountiful sunflowers grown in the pub's beer garden, our IPA has a deep golden color and distinct yet subtle citrus flavors that satisfy both the diehard IPA drinker and those who prefer a lighter palate. Sunflower IPA is truly a beer for the masses. McMenamins artists Lyle Hehn, Myrna Yoder and Jennifer Joyce were each asked to design a label for the new IPA. What resulted was three incredibly beautiful yet dissimilar ideas. Rather than choose one label, we will issue three different bottles throughout the year. Malts: Great Western 2-row, Briess 40L Crystal Hops: Chinook for bittering, with a blend of Chinook and Cascade for flavor and aroma Specifications: Original gravity: 1.062; Terminal Gravity: 1.011; Alcohol by Volume: 6.58% Calories/pint: 265

Tap at the Ringlers location. Hazy dark gold pour with a thin white head. Nice resiny citrus hop aroma. Smooth crisp malt with a resiny citrusy hop taste. Nice fresh IPA, otherwise not too distinct.

22oz bottle shared with deyholla, thanks Derek! Pours a cloudy golden-orange colored body with a finger-width, frothy, off-white head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is stale hops, peachy plastic, pines, some citrus, alcohol, and caramel. Flavor is better. Not so stale and plastic filled. A good amount of pines and earth with a light citrus. Solid caramel backing with some cereal graininess and some floral fruits. Finishes dry with a moderate bitterness. Lighter body with a moderate carbonation. Overall, not sure when this was bottled, but it didn’t taste too fresh. The hops just seemed off.

Bottle thanks to Lizzie! Poured a hazy orange amber with an off-white head that dissipated to the edges. Aroma had a strong light fruit note with some citrus and a bit of backing grain. Flavor was full of citrus with some light fruit and a grain backing.

Bold, complex, not as floral as I hoped for but very nice. On tap at hotel Oregon.

Tap. Super hazy orange with very little head but okay lacing. Smells of grapefruit and biscuit and tastes of the same. A little stale in the palate, but not nearly as bad as their other IPA.

Tap at barley mill. Pours a hazy darke golden amber with a decent foamy beige head. Bright citrusy orange and grapefruit hops. Pinen more grapefruit. Cereal and caramel flavor. Has a nice pine and grapefruit bite. Really nice. Malt profile is a bit muddled, but really nice hop character. A good pint.

Pint at Ringler’s Pours a cloudy light orange with a white head. The aroma is mild but some grassy and lightly citrusy hops are apparent. The palate is light and leads to a quite refreshing IPA. Some grapefruit, lemon, grass and semi sweet malts make up the flavor. Very mild IPA, but clean and fairly hoppy.
