Bottle from Sainsbury’s. Pours a real dark brown colour with a thin white head, real malty aroma with a hint of banana, the taste is malty with fruit and a dry finish.

500ml bottle. Pours a dark amber with a pillowy head. I really can’t fault the appearance; the head sticks around and spins a web of lace as the glass empties. Wow... a huge malty aroma that I can’t quite get on with. Smooth caramel taste that is particularly sweet. Lands somewhere between a bitter and a barley wine without ever quite making sense. Still, worth a try.

Clear dark brown colour with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, white head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, roasted, caramel, sweet caramel, riped dried banana, light to moderate yeast, yeast, riped fruit - fruit cake. Flavour is moderate to light light heavy sweet and light bitter with a long duration, sweet sweet caramel, swet sweet dark malt. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20111205]

Deep red colour. Strong fruity aroma. Very rich and silky texture. Flavour is sweet like the juice of dark red fruits. The finish is altogether much drier though giving a nice balance.

Bottled at chriso’s. Mahogany colour, small head. Heavy green apple aroma. Sweet and fruity, malty with burnt caramel and green apples. Low bitterness. Silky smooth, but overly apply.

Bottled. Deep amber colour, small off-white head. Aroma is dried bananas, some bitter wood, mild spices, fruits and some mild herbal notes. Flavour is quite much thee same with some vanilla added. Sweet and rather strange.

Bottle from Sainsbury’s Purley Way. It pours deep mahogany brown, with a bubbly beige head. The nose is varnish, chocolate, wood and dark fruit. The taste is wood, resin, varnish, fruit cake, raisin, medicinal, chocolate and warming alcohol, with a long bitter-dry finish. Full body, fine-moderate carbonation and foamy mouth-feel. Surprisingly good stuff!

Bottle. Red to Brown. Lots of sweetness. A raisiny kind. Marauding alcohol flavour. Not very well balanced.

From bottle. Looks great, pours chestnut/red/brown with thick tan head. Lots of alcohol on the aroma with some raisins and other dried fruit, tue alcohol is overpowering and unpleasant. Taste is unbalanced, lots of alcohol, some caramel malt and some dried fruit. Bitter ugly finish, not good.

I have to say that this beer has grown on me. At first, as is often the case, I can’t say I particularly enjoyed it, but now I have to restrain myself from opening the remaining three bottles I have. How will time change this fine beer? Both bitter and sweet, better than the British beers of this strength that I have tasted, it is too good to be in supermarkets!
