Bottle from Sainsburys. Amber colour, off-white head. Nose is malty, nutty, bit of brown sugar and molasses. Flavour is malty and nutty, slightly alcoholic. Slightly sweet and fruity strong ale. Medium bodied and alcoholic finish. I can see why people like this, but it’s not really to my liking.

From bottle. Looks great, pours chestnut/red/brown with thick tan head. Lots of alcohol on the aroma with some raisins and other dried fruit, tue alcohol is overpowering and unpleasant. Taste is unbalanced, lots of alcohol, some caramel malt and some dried fruit. Bitter ugly finish, not good.

Bottle from Sainsburys in Pinner. A dark brown/ruby red coloured pour with a small beige head on top. Sweet, caramel aroma. Tastes of caramel, quite sweet, dark fruit, malty. Rich and warming and ideal for Christmas. There is a touch of the Rocheforts about this one. Surprisingly good. Must stock up on this, currently 3 bottles for a fiver.

Cask Conditioned @ the Saturday session, St Albans Beer Festival 2004. Beer #37. This one popped up towards the end of the day. It was really nice, decent malt character, sweet, not too many hops and chocolate.

Light oak & caramel in aroma. Brown w/ tan head. Sweet toffee dominates with some fruity notes and a dry finish. Smooth medium-full. Nice stuff.

First tasted this at the Glasgow Winter Beer Festival in February 1997. Cask, gravity dispense. Ruby black in colour with a thin off white head. Sweet toffee notes in the powerful malty aroma. Creamy but thin mouthfeel and poor lacing. Dark malts give a moist maltloaf base with sweet juicy damsons, sultanas and prunes mixed with treacle toffee notes. There is a slight prickle of earthy hops in the aftertaste but this is short lived. Robust powerful malt returns with booming notes of dry oak cask and vinous fruit. A superb, strong Old Ale in style and highly recommended.
