4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Muddy brown unfiltered, with great head retention. Has a cascade nose. The taste has plenty of hops, but the maltiness comes more to the fore in the taste. Slightly creamy in texture, and solid bitter aftertaste. Overall, a great beer.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
This quite a bit more bitter than I had anticipated. Nice grapefruit citrus nose, and a kind of darker amber coloring. I feel like the hops overshadowed everything else in this beer and totally dominate the finish. This was good, but more body and a little balance would go a long way to making it awesome.

Excellent beer. Full flavored, plenty of malt character, and wonderfully bitter on the finish. Excellent beer.

Great hoopy aroma, with a touch of fruitiness. Nice balance of hops in the body. A great ESB.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: JUN 26, 2004 It could be better. It failed to impress me when I drank it at first. As I got deeper into the bottle I liked it more. Super malty and good.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: FEB 24, 2003 July 2001: Solid, solid bitter. Perhaps not as well balanced (not quite as sweet, bit too hoppy) as Vermont Pub, but still a nice example of the style. Beautiful tawny color and grapefruit nose are highlights.
February 2003: more pleased with the intense hoppiness this time perhaps; citrusy nature really comes through along with a pleasant pineyness and if you take a large mouthful you get some nice caramel as well. Great mouthfeel, and though I keep trying to find fault with McNeills instead I find myself rerating them higher. A true classic.

An all around decent bitter. Iím using this comment box to plug their Ruby Ale. Iím from Vermont, and believe me, McNeilís Ruby Ale is the best beer ever made in the state. One of the best beers Iíve EVER had. A true knockout. Why the brewer decided to make the Ruby Ale a only few months out of the year is baffling. If you, beer drinker, ever have a chance to get this beer, do it. You will not be disappointed. It would get a 19 rating.
