canary dog (376), Rutland, Vermont, USA Sep 29, 2001 A very fresh tasting, well made brown ale. Mellow and tasty, with a perfect balance of hops and malt in the mild finish. SNIAT (120), Passaic, New Jersey, USA Sep 6, 2001 Not one of McNeills finest beers, but not a miss by any chance. Malty with a bit of smoke. Lacks at little in the palate department, but set me up any time. muzzlehatch (4425), Burlington, Vermont, USA Sep 22, 2001 The THIRD distinct ’brown ale’ from this brewer I’ve had; McNeills is neverending. This one’s up to par, just about. Main problem is a slight thinness, both to the head and body; could also be sweeter (it’s a brown, after all). But malty and nutty as you’d want; improves a lot if slightly warm. argo0 (6167), Washington DC, USA Nov 15, 2005 (draft) Clear dark brwn body with beige head. Aroma is medium sweet, caramel, some chocolate, light grapefruit. Taste is medium sweet, orange, caramel, some chocolate, earthy. Watery light-medium body, very drinkable. Quite an enjoyable session beer. Hopistotle420 (1177), Amherst, Massachusetts, USA Feb 26, 2004 Pours a nice ruby brown, with the usual McNeill's rocky head. Nutty, sweet nose. Sweet nutty palate, toffee, slight roasted grain, minerals, faint metallic, hint of smoke, light bodied, finishing with a citrus (grapefruit) like hoppiness. Definately better with warmth, another nice session brown from Ray and the gang.
