Glouglouburp (1919), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Aug 10, 2008 In short: A simplistic highly roasted stout without much complexity. Boringly roasted.
How: Bottle 22oz, drank the day of purchase (therefore most likely very fresh)
The look: Black body topped by a short-lived beige head
In long: Nose is roasted. Taste is roasted too and honestly there’s just not much more than roastiness about this beer. As usual with highly roasted stouts you get the feeling of maybe black chocolate and/or coffee but in this case its mainly pure roastiness that resembles burnt wood. Effective hops but roastiness remains the dominant flavour all the way through including the finish and after-taste. Any more roasted and you’d need a Dustbuster ™ to clean up if you spill some. craftycarl21 (174), South Hero, Vermont, USA Jul 20, 2008 excellent pour- pitch black with a four finger dark brown head and intense carbonation building from the bottom. aroma of dark malt, plum, raisin, coffee, cream, and some chocolate- really delicious, not as bitter as some stouts. Flavor is very good- roasted malt, coffee, bitter chocolate, and a piney woodiness are clearly evident. Palate is nice, but nothing special for a stout in that department. Overall a very nice beer, may bring me back to trying more mcneill’s after being disappointed by their pullman’s porter. Ty5592 (1009), Hatfield, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 1, 2008 Bottle from 46er3498. Black with milk chocolate head. Big deep roasted malt aroma. Light coffee and dark chocolate notes begin to show up as the beer warms. The taste is deep roasted malt with light coffee and choclate. Very dry finish. Not bad. Much better as it warms up. nolankowal (826), Dublin, Ohio, USA Nov 20, 2007 Bottle. Black pour with a tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, light smoke, and baker’s chocolate. Flavors of Dark chocolate and roasted malt...a bit of coffee perhaps. Medium body, roasty with a roasty/dry finish. Beerded_one (1570), Croydon, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 27, 2007 Bottle sampled Pours black with a small tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, and a hint of oak. Flavor is creamy and slick with dark chocolate, roasted malts, coffee, and some smoke with a dry finish. awesome stout
