Bottle from Asahiya. Light coffee, anise, pine/cedar nose. Very dark, near black, little head. Smooth light choco initial / some tang and herbal notes / finish goes to tart prunes and then fades. Thin body. Okay. A bit watery. But basic flavors are intact

I have a hard time considering this a schwartzbier. Weird water caracter, dusty yeast, savory malt.

(12oz bottle) clear deep brown, creamy medium tan head. Nose smells like a kvass, molasses, wort, very sweet and cracked grain. Taste of sweet wort, cola, cream, cracked grain, nice palate, creamy, really quite good for the style.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 heemer77 (5013) - Urbandale, Iowa, USA - JAN 23, 2013
Bottle. The body is very dark brown, nearly black with garnet at the edges. There is a nice light brown sugar colored head. The anise tinged nose has some toffee. This tastes of black tea and anise. There is also some light roasted coffee. Decent with a fair amount of carbonation. A decent schwarzbier.
2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 n00bface (137) - Minneapolis, USA - JAN 15, 2013
On tap at McSorley’s (New York, New York)
Aroma: Charred nuts, licorice, some bread.
Appearance: Dark bread, minimal white head.
Taste: Slight bitterness. Like burnt toast.
Palate: Light bodied with a soft carbonation.
McSorleys is a great establishment and the beer is fitting in the context of McSorleys, but it’s not particularly good on its own.
