Helles is the German word for ‘light’ as in light colour, and this golden coloured beer is typified by a refreshing piney, citrus hop aroma sitting atop a predominantly light malt accented palate.
The hop aromas and delicate malt flavours work together in perfect balance to produce a refreshing beer with a clean, crisp finish. The Hallertaur hop does all its work on the nose, meaning this is a beer with very low bitterness. An ideal companion to roast pork, light seafood pasta, goats cheese salad, or an apricot tatin.

Pint poured at The White Horse on Parsons Green (London), a clear straw colour with a little carbonation and no head. Subtle grassy hop aroma which was quite pleasant. Wasn’t very dry for a lager, a refreshing smoothness of grass at first but then apricot and rockmelon flavours in the finish.

On tap at the Market Porter. I played a game with myself trying to guess who might of had this and I got the 3 previous tasters absolutely right. Smug or what? That was until Joeh had it before I could rate it. Gold with thin white head. Better than most straight forward lagers with attractive citrus aroma. Bit of vomit flavour in mouth with nice citric/lemon/lime bit on end. Not bad

Draught - Keg at the Market Porter. Golden. Rounded malt aroma with some background sweetness, straw and virtually no hops. Not bad but uninteresting.

UPDATED: AUG 13, 2007 Draught at The Market Porter, Southwark, London. Mid gold colour. Soft and smooth with a very light underlying malt character. Some sweetness. Mouthfeel is a touch thin. Pleasant enough but not to much there to get your teeth into.

Tap@Greenwich Union, Greenwich. Quite light, with some light sweetness, with a touch of grassy hop in the finish. Some berry fruit and melon, a bit too light though.
