3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 5/20
(Meantime Navel Collage Old Porter) Aroma of roasted malts, sweet meats, and a hint of smoke. Pours a deep blackish brown with no head or lacing. The taste is roasty with a strong peat smoke finish and aftertaste. Medium-full mouthfeel with medium carbonation. Overall, a very smokey scotch-like porter.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Bottled @ de Molen tasting, small sample. Dark color, short head. Aroma of huge peat, tar, medicine, iodine, bit roasted malts. Medium bitter with a sour twist most likely from the peated whisky. Bit thin in taste. I’m not a fan of peated stuff and this one is a bit too one-dimensional in the peat. Not my beer.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle at the March 2014 De Molen monthly tasting. Poured a clear dark brown with a thin broken light tan head. The aroma is medicinal, band aid, peat, alcohol. The flavour is medium bitter light sour with a rich fruit liqourice malt palate Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Quite a shock initially, but it rapidly grew on me. I’d love to drink more and hopefully I will.

3.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Handwritten Bottle pre labeling from the brewer. Thanks Meantime brewer and PP @ 2nd Tuesday tasting. Aroma is huge huge iodine, peat, smoke, chocolate, roast etc. Flavour is huge smokey, iodine, sourish roast notes, caramel etc. You’ve gotta like smokey iodine but if you do it great. Could have a bit more body to back up the huge flavours.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottled 25/12/13. A black beer with a whitish head and lace. Islay smokiness in the nose but it’s quite thin. Good smoke and burnt roasty malts in the mouth. Doesn’t drink its strength. The Islay works nicely for me. Wouldn’t have thought this was in the barrel for two years.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Black pour, moderate head, decent lace/retention. Aroma is roast, coffee, chocolate, caramel, light light barrel. Seriously I wouldn’t have guessed this was barrel aged. Medium to full body, somewhat bitter roasted finish. Pretty nice.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
750 mL bottle. Part of a tasting 11/24/2013 at Fraser’s Pub in Ann Arbor. The pour is a nice dark brown/black with a thin filmy head and no lace. The aroma is very heavy on the vanilla and a bit of bourbon with a nice smokey characteristic to it. The flavor is immediately bourbon heavy with coffee and chocolate taking the back seat. The flavor fizzles out quickly to a soft chocolatey finish

3.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle, from some US online outlet. This is sold in the US as “Naval College Old Porter”, as American regulation will not allow the name “hospital” to be associated with a beer. Certainly an aggravating aspect would be the strong flavour of Dexamethasone (Decadron) that could convey the impression of anti-inflammatory properties. The beer looks lovely dark brown with a decent beige head. Aromas are fruity, with red currants and tart cherries, but the music gets out of tune with the strong Dexamethasone flavour, among chocolates, Ovaltine and filberts. The Islay malt only comes out much later, as it warms in the glass, adding the alcohol and the peat to the melange. There’s more carbonation than I’d want to see in such a beer. Not bad, but not even among my favourites for this broad style.
