4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: OCT 2, 2012 Although I have little love for IPAs, particularly the american type, I bought this beer considering the historical value. Out of curiosity, just to taste what it was supposed to be Hodgson’s India Pale ale, some 200 years ago. I loved the presentation, the coppered blonde tone and the admirable turbidity. Hefe! The aroma was delicious: wet pine crates, engorged with fermenting beer. And with all my heart, I hated the first sip. Hoppy and bitter as gall, so far away from any well behaved modern English IPA. But then, what was I expecting? It was a true India Pale Ale that I was tasting. It was indeed slashing with bitterness, but you know what? It was just right!I never thought I’d be so pleased with such a bitter beer. None of the citrus-drenched nonsense of American IPAs. As the ale goes down, the bitterness is much downtoned by malty flavours and even a subtle citrusy memory and, in the end, it left a pleasant palate that was making be crave for more.
It was good to cross the oceans, to pass through Brazilian pirates, corrupt Indian customs officers and all that rot. It was good to quench the thirst of thousands in the subcontinent. And yes, it was certainly good to impress a loyal IPA sceptic.

Bottle. Dark amber with big off white head. Spicy peppery and earthy aroma. Taste of caramel and toffee, slightly resinous, touch of green apple. Slightly tangy and quite bitter.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle shared at barbecue, would have been nicer if it was sunny! 9th June 2013, this is an English style IPA, the hops are more subdued, not aromatic, drinkable and fairly enjoyable, a little harsh in places, the alcohol comes through

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20

Head: off-white, medium, frothy, good retention. Colour: rich amber, hazy.
Aroma: strong hoppy, tropical fruit, dried fig. Taste: strong and juicy fruit sweetness, balanced my moderate hop bitterness. Medium body. A rich, juicy and satisfying ale. Very good!

3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Cold 75cl bottle. Clear light orange with decent white head. Bit of caramel in the smell. Taste has quite a lot of caramel, some background floral flavours. Enduring aftertaste. Somewhere in between an IPA and an DIPA in terms of flavour. Nice, easy drinking. Good stuff.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Cutesy mini magnum bottle. Again, consumed under duress due to the Sloth Paradox. Damn you Bert! Pours a photon eating amber. Thin ring of head cling s for dear life to the sides of the glass. Hops are muted in the nose dute to the huge sweet malt onslaught. The film of head diminishes quickly from total coverage to a shape similar to the outline of Tasmania complete with Sarah Island, and then after a few quaffs it looks like Iceland. Club me like a baby seal this beer is tasty! Body is short lived but shaped like a Brontosaurus. (It’s my theory!) Starts off slow gets real big and then ends small and is drawn out but still dangerous for a plant eater. I may not emerge from the basement this afternoon. Should have bought two of these....Damn Slothian paradox.
