4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: OCT 2, 2012 Although I have little love for IPAs, particularly the american type, I bought this beer considering the historical value. Out of curiosity, just to taste what it was supposed to be Hodgson’s India Pale ale, some 200 years ago. I loved the presentation, the coppered blonde tone and the admirable turbidity. Hefe! The aroma was delicious: wet pine crates, engorged with fermenting beer. And with all my heart, I hated the first sip. Hoppy and bitter as gall, so far away from any well behaved modern English IPA. But then, what was I expecting? It was a true India Pale Ale that I was tasting. It was indeed slashing with bitterness, but you know what? It was just right!I never thought I’d be so pleased with such a bitter beer. None of the citrus-drenched nonsense of American IPAs. As the ale goes down, the bitterness is much downtoned by malty flavours and even a subtle citrusy memory and, in the end, it left a pleasant palate that was making be crave for more.
It was good to cross the oceans, to pass through Brazilian pirates, corrupt Indian customs officers and all that rot. It was good to quench the thirst of thousands in the subcontinent. And yes, it was certainly good to impress a loyal IPA sceptic.

Wonderful piney and hoppy flavor, but the taste is almost delicate, which is a pleasant difference. Not quite as brash as I usually like my IPAs, but one of the better ones I’ve had for certain!

BB 12.2014, 0,75L bottle. Aroma: fruits, floral, honey. Pours amber with nice white head. The head disappears rather quickly. Nice lacing. Taste: sweetness, citrus, caramel, slight bitterness. Finish: fruity and bitter, not a big fan of hops used here. Lively carbonation. Overall: solid IPA, but nothing special.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Cloudy orange colour, white bubbly head. Aroma - depth of malt complexity, orange peel, earthy, spicy. Taste - spicy hops, marmalade, short bitterness, quite thin body considering the abv, orange, slight citrus. Good beer and probably more authentic an IPA than the dry hopped malt bombs from America but lacks some body. Although I appreciate the use of english hops in this beer it would be nice to get a little more hop bite from from some American hops.
