Nose-clean, unsticky hops, mild dry fruits. Taste-medium bitter, soapy, over toasted malts, low to medium alcohol on the back end, biting CO2 on the back end, unsweet grapefruit, pear, light wood and tannins, low key sweetness, hop bitterness is just right. What can I say? It’s an English IPA. Everything is good and solid, just muted and low key. I imagine that this is what the original IPA’s tasted like. Not mind blowing but nice enough. Soapy, greasy mouthfeel. YourDarkLord (1800), Urbana, Illinois, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | May 5, 2006 Pleasant surprise. This amber brew with a frothy off-white head gave off notes of caramel malt, grassy hops, citrus zest. Medium body. Flavor was slightly sweet malt with a hoppy finish. Not exceptional but very pleasing. JCB (1799), Durham, North Carolina, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Aug 24, 2008 750ml from Total Wine, North Raleigh. A pour that’s pretty handsome, much like the bottle this beer comes in. Clear and bright golden, with a fairly rich head. Very understated nose, some fruity notes, clean hops. The mouthfeel is a bit thin for such a relatively heavy IPA, not nearly as aggressively hopped as other descriptions suggest, at least to me. More caramel and malt than I’m looking for, though the somewhat dry finish redeems the brew at the end. Decent, but at this price there are several other English IPAs I’ll hit first.
