Meantime Brew Master, Alastair Hook, has spent 20 years planning the quintessential English lager. His reasoning is simple. The great European lager brewers use very soft water and neutral yeasts to ensure that only the flavours of their locally grown malt and hops come to the fore. East Anglia is home to the world’s finest malting barley and Kent is home to some of the world’s best hops. Midway between the two, London is ideally placed to bring them together in a straightforward, clean, long-matured, unpasteurised lager, where all you can taste is malt and hop.

Poured straw with a disappearing off white head. Aroma of sweet grainy malt. Light body, flavour as the aroma. OK lager.

Great Lager with beautiful taste and appearance. Much better than the "commercial" and widely spread lager!

Bottle. M&S. Clear, green gold. Film of white head. Quite grassy. Bit of lemon. Pale malts. Fairly crisp. Bit of sweet. Tiny bit greasy. Finishes light sweet, and light dry. Ok.

Bottle from Minster Tavern, Ely. Light yellow with a nice white head. Fizzy. Grainy, malty smell. The taste holds a bit more sweetness than expected from the aroma, with a satisfying bittersweet finish. Well-carbonated. A decent enough lager but not something I’d drink all night.

A clear, gold-yellow lager with the familiar firm, white layer of foam. It has a slightly hop like aroma in the background, but nothing else comes to mind. A fresh, bitter taste which moves on into a somewhat malty aftertaste, but doesn’t hold on for long.

Very pale golden colour. The nose is quite sweet and a little bit malty. A bit of honeyed character as well as a bit of light sweetness. Fairly under hopped with a touch of herbal hoppiness. Gets a bit cloying the more you go through it. Meh. Pretty forgettable.

Clear yellow colour, small head that vanishes too soon. Tiny lace. Herbal and citrus aroma. Light body. Clean palate, taste of citrus, herbal. A bit dissappointing, I expected more from a Meantime.
