COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle.
Meantime Brew Master, Alastair Hook, has spent 20 years planning the quintessential English lager. His reasoning is simple. The great European lager brewers use very soft water and neutral yeasts to ensure that only the flavours of their locally grown malt and hops come to the fore. East Anglia is home to the world’s finest malting barley and Kent is home to some of the world’s best hops. Midway between the two, London is ideally placed to bring them together in a straightforward, clean, long-matured, unpasteurised lager, where all you can taste is malt and hop.

330ml bottle bought in City Super, TST, Hong Kong. I didn’t hold out for anything special for this beer as it is a lager and not my style. As far as lagers go though, it’s better than the macros and like Tsing Tao or Carlsberg and it is refreshing after a day’s work, but it’s not a beer I will choose again, if there is an alternative.

Light haze on this gold beer, tidy white head. Palate is light and crisp and semi dry. Fresh minerals. Light pale malt. Dry finish. Not much else going on. A poor show from Meantime - they can do much better than this.

Actually pretty tasty for a larger. Rich, creamy malt profile, with some lemon and grass, wood.

Tap at the Union Tavern - Westbourne Park, London. Pours clear, pale yellow with a foamy white head. Simple doughy malt nose, some straw. Light sweet flavor with delicate doughy biscuits, very slight straw bitterness. Light bodied with fine to average carbonation. Balanced finish, more doughy pale malts and straw. Very tasty. Simple.

Cask at St. John, London. Not a bad little lager. A bit of hops, quite bready and sweet tasting. You can tell it’s quality even if it’s still just a pale lager.

Nothing amazing but decent for a lager. Better then many other beers on tap in England. But found it was a bit pricey on tap.

Bottle at level 39 canary wharf. Middle of the road lager. Not much going on. Yellow small white head. Clean pilsner malt carbonic bite, very little hop.

4.5% on sale at 250 yen from Rakuten. Decent mild fruity grass aroma on a clear straw colored body with fluffy white foam. A clear lager with a tiny bit of a bitter finish over a medium body. A good palate cleanser but boring to drink all the time. But a pretty decent lager, not exciting but palatable.

I always dread the experience of trying a new pale lager. Even more if it is from a brewery that produces some great beer. So this London Lager was a lovely surprise. I loved the fruity nose behind the normal skunkiness of the pale lager. A bit sour, something like a strawberry or raspberry. The beer is well-balanced, sweet with some tart bitterness, crisp and pleasant. A rather shy english version of Moa Breakfast.
