Meantime Brew Master, Alastair Hook, has spent 20 years planning the quintessential English lager. His reasoning is simple. The great European lager brewers use very soft water and neutral yeasts to ensure that only the flavours of their locally grown malt and hops come to the fore. East Anglia is home to the world’s finest malting barley and Kent is home to some of the world’s best hops. Midway between the two, London is ideally placed to bring them together in a straightforward, clean, long-matured, unpasteurised lager, where all you can taste is malt and hop.

330ml Bottle from Tesco, Gilsgate, Durham. Crisp-looking, golden pour with a quickly diminishing, white head and less carbonation than expected. It smells like a standard, dull pale lager, slightly acidic, with eggy off-notes and CO2. The flavour is slightly bready and slightly plasticy, with little to no hop character. I expected better.

Normal colour for a lager, small head, little lacing. Strong grainy aroma, harsh malty taste, very dry hoppy finish. Easy to drink but very dry. Okay but bot great

Bottle at The Green Dragon, Leek (JDW) Pours a clear golden colour with a fizzy white head. Aroma of grassy hops, subtle lemon and slight vegetable. Taste of grassy hops, cardboard, some lemon, straw and grain. Light bodied and a fizzy carbonation. A soft, grassy hop bitterness in the finish. Worse than most lagers, grassy, cardboard flavours and highly carbonated. Disappointing.

Bottle, biscuity nose, light grassy hops, dry and crisp, lightly spicy hops, sweetish malt undertones, above average lager.

Bottle from Seoul Plaza. Aroma buttery, lightly oxidized, otherwise quite okay, some grassy hops showing. Clear golden colour, quickly disappearing head. Taste is... well nothing special. Some green apples, some diacetyl, not at all letting the ingredient shine. Not clean. The boast "all you can taste is malt and hops" is simply wrong. Drinkable but nothing more.
