evilsoc (191), Wales Mar 7, 2008 Great looking black/deep ruby and a long lasting tan head. Coffee and biscuit aromas. Great chocolate truffle flavour, roasty slighlty burned. perfect sweet bitter balance. almost a blue cheese note to it!? in a nice way. The best meantime brew and the best dark beer ive had in a while. Very good. MoDog (910), Griffith, Indiana, USA Mar 6, 2008 Poured from a 750ml caged and corked bottle and served in an English pint glass. This porter poured a semi-transparent cola brown. A thick head of tan foam slowly settled down to a thin layer that lasted the duration of the drink. A heavy coating of lace covered the sides of the glass. The aroma of the beer was made up of roasted coffee and nuts, mild caramel, dark fruit, and a touch of chocolate. The flavor included smooth roasted malts, caramel, chocolate, and some ripe fruit notes. The palate was medium-bodied and very smooth with moderate carbonation. This was a really nice porter. Very tasty, and very quaffable. faroeviking (6024), Republica Vikingo de las, Faroe Islands Mar 3, 2008 Bottle. Pours a pitch black colour with a nice light brown creamy long lasting head leaving a good lacing. Aroma of chocolate indeed with roasted malt, coffee and dark fruits. Good but bit thin mouthfeel. The flavour is soft with lots of chocolate, well roasted malt, cofeee, bit of dark fruits and some liquorice. Roasty chocolate finish. Jukkabro (2983), Tampere, Finland Feb 24, 2008 Deep dark amber colored, slightly cloudy appearance. Little light brown head. Berry aroma with nice licorice, some sourness also here. Surprisingly carbonated palate, medium bodied. Flavor is also strongly sour with berries and strong licorice. Aftertaste turns to mildly roasted with sweetness. Good one, though not as excellent than expected. gunhaver (1024), Tampa, Florida, USA Feb 19, 2008 Updated: Jun 5, 2008Bottle, courtesy Tony at Oldsmar Tap House. Pours a deep orangish red, with brown highlights. Big, cotton-like fluffy head. Lots of lacing all over the glass. Aroma is sticky, with spicy licorice, sour grapes, roasted malt. Flavors of spicy chocolate, cider, clove, bottomed-out malts, smoky, cherished hops, and a bit of molasses. Bitter finish, wet, drippy on the tongue. rustan (13), Asheville, North Carolina, USA Feb 17, 2008 Mahogany pour with thick creamy head. Nose is robust with molasses and hints of soy sauce. Taste starts sweet with cocoa/coffee and figs mid mouth. Finish is pleasantly dry. Recommended! thegreenrooster (1811), St.louis, Missouri, USA Feb 8, 2008 Pour is a black with a small tan head. Aroma is pretty killer. Lots of chocolate and coffee with a little touch of dark fruit in the end. Flavor is a letdown from the aroma as its very watery but i do get some strong coffee and a bit of tobacco. I guess this is a good rep of the style back in the day but it also reminds me that we make better beer in the present. Stew41 (1042), Caulfield, Australia Feb 4, 2008 I like this. Porter on a mild dose of steriods perhaps? Although the recipe purports to be very authentic (and I have absolutly no reason to doubt this) this porter is certainly a stronger, bigger souped up style. Chocolate and dry roast / metal shavings on the nose. Palate weight is high for the style and shows plenty of chocolate and malts, although there’s a clear dry kick late that serves as a reminder that this beer is a porter. Awesome packaging too.
