DougShoemaker (2855), Toronto, Canada Sep 30, 2008 Nose has roast coffee, cocoa, nuts and wood. Black, tiny tan head. Flavour is a jolt of coffee, some liquorice notes and a dollop of dark chocolate. Full bodied, balanced, bitter and pleasantly dry at the finish. Wonderful! Thank You Torontoblue. jujubeast6000 (772), Houston, Texas, USA Sep 29, 2008 (bottle): Pours a dark brown body, transparent w/Ruby edges. Average tan head, somewhat diminishing. Malty aroma, roastinsss, coffee. Coffee, fizzy, dry roastiness & malts. Pretty tasty. mcox90 (618), Wilton, USA Sep 21, 2008 750ml bottle, courtesy of Daknole. Pours a deep reddish brown color with a fairly large off white head. Nose is coffee, chocolate and vanilla bean. Smooth, silky palate with a moderate amount of carbonation. Flavors mimic the nose with just hints of the aforementioned flavors. They all blend well together without any one of them trying to dominate. Very enjoyable brew. bluevegie (2169), Perth, Australia Sep 21, 2008 Fairly clear, dark ruby red body with a light tan head. Malt aroma, coffee chocolate and then some smokey notes. Taste is very much the same as the aroma promises, tried the Fullers London Porter a few weeks back and whilst this one was good enjoyed the Fulers more. donfardz64 (406), Wellington, New Zealand Sep 4, 2008 Impressive corked 750mL bottle from Malthouse (last one sorry!). Poured dark dark ruby red, with a beautiful tan head which hung about. Very prominent aromas, strong hints of chocolate/coffee, burnt malt, vanilla. Flavour is bitter straight away, with intense chocolaty bitterness, faint coffee, hint of vanilla. Amazing porter, my favourite yet. Balanced yet complex with all the flavours working together seamlessly. tarjei (1741), Bryne, Norway Aug 29, 2008 75 cl bottle. Hopheads´ tasting 22. august. Dark brown reddish color. Fine beige head. Aroma is roasted malt. Flavor is roasted malt, sweetness, chocolate, coffee. Bitterness in the finish. Nice. Angeloregon (2024), Portland, Oregon, USA Aug 28, 2008 Bottle sampled from Green Dragon in PDX at Meet the Brewer event with Alasdair Hook--Poured a deep dark black-brown body with a medium beige head. Chalky, robust, nutty, chewy nose. Lots of chocolaty maltiness. Prickly mouthfeel that ended creamy and dry. Hints of oatmeal, vanilla, coffee, toffee, and chocolate in this complex stout. Bittering hoppiness in the dry follow through. Very nice British brew. JCB (1716), Durham, North Carolina, USA Aug 27, 2008 750 from Total Wine, North Raleigh. Sampled this back in the day, when this stuff was still rocking $15 a bottle. Somehow, though, I found it to be more competent than some of this brewery’s other offerings. Moderate hop aroma complements the malts coming off this deep brown beer. Slightly thin head and body, but there’s a pleasing complexity to the flavors – milk chocolate, a hint of molasses, a trace of oatmeal even. Roasted qualities over the top of everything, nice crisp finish.
