tarjei (1154), Bryne, Norway Aug 29, 2008 75 cl bottle. Hopheads´ tasting 22. august. Dark brown reddish color. Fine beige head. Aroma is roasted malt. Flavor is roasted malt, sweetness, chocolate, coffee. Bitterness in the finish. Nice. Angeloregon (1867), Portland, Oregon, USA Aug 28, 2008 Bottle sampled from Green Dragon in PDX at Meet the Brewer event with Alasdair Hook--Poured a deep dark black-brown body with a medium beige head. Chalky, robust, nutty, chewy nose. Lots of chocolaty maltiness. Prickly mouthfeel that ended creamy and dry. Hints of oatmeal, vanilla, coffee, toffee, and chocolate in this complex stout. Bittering hoppiness in the dry follow through. Very nice British brew. JCB (1001), Durham, North Carolina, USA Aug 27, 2008 750 from Total Wine, North Raleigh. Sampled this back in the day, when this stuff was still rocking $15 a bottle. Somehow, though, I found it to be more competent than some of this brewery’s other offerings. Moderate hop aroma complements the malts coming off this deep brown beer. Slightly thin head and body, but there’s a pleasing complexity to the flavors – milk chocolate, a hint of molasses, a trace of oatmeal even. Roasted qualities over the top of everything, nice crisp finish. ucusty (1016), Wake Forest, North Carolina, USA Aug 27, 2008 Dark brown pour with a small tan head that mostly diminished with fair lacing, no visible carbonation, opaque, and an orange brown hue. Nose was malty, sweet, chocolate, coffee and some licorice notes. Flavor was licorice, mild coffee, bitter chocolate. jake65 (1238), Meridian, Idaho, USA Aug 27, 2008 Bottle: Mild depth of brown with bif, fizzy tan head. Plenty of carbonation here. Mild coffee and roasty aroma, sort of sweet. Tastes is roasty and coffee filled, but has a strange feeling of being stored in a pvc pipe. Could this be the yeast? Whatever is was, I didn’t jive with this one.
