"Meantime’s London Stout is very much an old London beer as it would be made today."

Bottle sample at a tasting at avrashi’s place. Thanks Ariel. Pours clear dark brown with a frothy, creamy head. A little rotten egg, coffee and roast aroma, tastes coffee, bitter, slightly roasty. Eggy finish, medium body, light carbonation, roast in the finish as well. Cool.

From 500ml bottle. Short tan head over dark beer. Aroma is roasted malt. Palate is fizzy, thick and slightly astringent. Flavour is grassy, dark malt, dregs of black coffee, distant licorice in the dry slightly bitter finish. Bottle label says it’s a Malt only recipe but also displays the Yeast, Malt, Water, Hops logo which is a bit misleading.

Quite a disappointment. Schwarzbier for me should be nearly around stout, but you cant call 4.5 ABV "stout". Mostly water with some evident roasted malt presence. Thats about it Light cocoa background, moderate to light sweetness, light bitterness. Watery

Bottle from Waitrose. (£2.09) Pours creamy. Overall impression is it's a quite delicate stout, with some flavour present, but nothing too special. Cairngorm's Black Gold (slightly weaker at 4.4% ABV) has much more complexity. Average. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

500 ml bottle bought at CitySuper in Harbour City, Tsim Sha Tsui during October’s “Beer Festival” promotion.

Clear Cola blackish brown colour; Three-quarter finger head and beige foam which lasts for 90 seconds; Excellent sticky lacing and small fizzy carbonation; Fragrant and sweet aroma of dark malt, with vanilla, mocha, milk chocolate, toffee, cream, sugar, and light grass; Light sweet taste of dark malt, with very strong roast nuts, metallic, light smoke, wheaty tartness, light caramel, moderate black coffee, dark chocolate, cream crackers, light lemon, moderate bitter hops and sharp strawy grass; Light body. Watery and quite crisp palate; Mouth feel is dark malt with strong roast nuts. Could have been rich but was seriously thinned by wheat malt with distinctive tartness, resulting in only lightweight dark chocolate, black coffee and just hints of caramel. Not as nice as the aroma suggest. Hmmm… Hoppiness is light grass nose, light lemon and sharp grass in taste. Moderate bitterness for a lasting mid-astingent and very roasty finish; Quite dry after taste. Very roasty and quite bitter to mouth.

Comments: I doubt this was a Schwarz at first, but the fairly good head, strong carbo and rather plain malt base indicate this is not much of a Stout or Porter. Its aroma is sweet and nice, but was ruined by too much wheat to thin the otherwise solid, nutty malt base. The result is quite hollow and lacking, even some average macro German Schwarz tastes richer than this. The Meantime guys love to put their own stamps on traditional things, and this make-believe Stout is a step too far. Once is enough.

Bottle. Waitrose. Dark red. Tan head that starts off thick, and bubbly, then settles, and firms up nicely. Dark fruit. Light roast. A little tartness. Taste is dry, and a little tart. Medium body. Bit too much fizz. Finishes dry, with the tartness lingering.
