"Meantime’s London Stout is very much an old London beer as it would be made today."

500ml bottle at home cellar cool. Black pudding and licquorice aroma, (seriously)! Dark ruby body, tan head. dark chocolate, figs, cold coffee flavours, dry biscuity finish. Slick palate. Enough carbonation to provide a tasty "burp memory". What’s not to like? Is this a "Schwarzbier" because of the lagering? More stouty bitterness evident.

Bottle, 500 ml. Pours jet black with a fair amount quickly dissipating tan head. Roasted/burnt malts, chocolate and an earthen note make up most of the aroma, which also has a hint of caramel. Taste is a little more complex and actually not quite what I was expecting from the aroma; after an initial chocolate/malty hit, some fruitier notes come surging forward, these being of a sour nature. Finish is bone dry and quite bitter, with a metallic edge that I’ve found to be a frequent presence in Meantime’s concoctions. Bit too sharp on the palate due to the sour notes and the carbonation, and feels a bit thin bodied, but nice tasting overall.

1/2 Pint at Meantime Union. Ok aroma. chocolate, coffee, little smoked peat. Dark orangy brown color good head and lace. Sweet flavor. Medium body thin smooth creamy mouthfeel. Mid smoked chocolate charcoal finish. Nice.SSession stout. Flavor best part for me. Aroma a little duller. Fine overall.

Bottle from Waitrose. Pours almost black with small tan head. Roasted malt and coffee on the nose, not much else. Taste is dominated by roast malt and coffee with almost metallic tones, but feels very thin and watery in mouth which lets this beer down. Could do with a higher abv to give it better mouthfeel. Overall, fairly disappointing and one dimensional.

Dark brown, not black, high fizz, didn’t really get on with this beer, seems like a pop version of stout, bit one dimension tasting, coffee and smoky not very rich, bit thin for my liking.

Bottle at home. Poured a dark brown with a medium pale tan head. Got some smokiness, coffee, chocolate, bit of fruit. Roasted malt flavour, bit of sweetness. Not very stout like but pretty drinkable. Quite liked it.

This was bought in a 50ml bottle. The colour is very dark, almost black, and the aroma is of dark roasted malt. The texture is surprisingly light and the taste, although dominated by bitter dark coffee flavours, is quite sweet. The finish is hoppy and dry. A beguiling mixture of the sweet and the bitter characterises this real old- fashioned stout.

Draught @ the old brewery. Aroma of some burnt malt and coffee. Very dark brown with small thick light brown head. Lasting. Taste of burnt coffee. Balanced bitterness and sweetness. Finish is bitter and dry. Not as thick texture as expected. Oily/watery. Average carbonation.
