Beese (1540) - Watford, Hertfordshire, ENGLAND - JAN 2, 2014
Bottle of the 6% variant from Marks & Spencer, Watford. Poured a bright ruby colour with a thin, tight off white head. Aroma of cloves, berries and iodine. Smoked malt dominates the initial flavour with notes of brown sugar and spice. Finish was toasted malt, caramel and Christmas cake. Rather liked this.

rauchbier (3596) - Isle Of Beer, Lincolnshire, ENGLAND - DEC 29, 2013
Bottle, 6% version from Marks & Spencers, Grimsby. Chestnut brown, thin shortlived off white head and moderate condition. Gentle sweet burnt toffee and a muted woody smokiness in the nose, slightly chalky in the mouth with the woodsmoke notes slightly more dominant over a now subdued toffee sweetness, finish has a low sweet smoky bitterness lingering briefly.

On tap at Slow’s BBQ. Medium brown and bitter. OK drinkability. A bile.t under the style.

Pours a clear copper from the bottle with bubbly head and moderate lace. Aroma is smoky and slightly metallic maltiness, hints of oak, slight underlying sweetness. Taste is smoke and sweet malt, over smooth. Not crazy smoky, nice balance, biscuit sweet ending. Pretty nice.

Tap at Brasserie V. Big classic Bamberg rauch aroma. Not so far removed from Ur-Bock. Smooth and easy. This is a solid offering. Meaty, clean, no stickiness, just smooth raisin tinged malt. One the best Meantime beers I’ve had. Nails it.

Bottle at home from Marks and Spencer. Aroma is sweet mapel bacan smoked bacon. Red copper colour with a persistent thin cream head. Flavour is sweet nutty caramel, smokey bacan and light salt caramel. Finish is pretty dry. Finish is nice rye spicy quality.

From Fosse M&S. Pours with a slim grey-beige cap over ruby beer. Genuine smoked ham and processed cheese, Bamburg-hinting aroma. Rusted with strong iron and bitterness beneath gammon-thick smoke; chocolate, grilled veg. OK but the metal and bitterness don’t really fit.
