Brewed primarily for Michael Jackson’s Rare Beer Club, but also available in limited quantities on tap at the Greenwich Union pub.
After India Pale Ale and London Porter the third great British export beer was Scotch Ale. It was brewed at lower temperatures than English ales and cold conditioned for six to eight weeks. Scotland’s remoteness from the hop gardens of Southern England & the softness of the water of the Scottish lowlands made Scotch Ale the world’s finest expression of malt flavour in beer.

750 mL bottle. The pour is a darker ruby tinted brown with a thin frothy white head and some decent lacing left on the glass. The aroma is malty and very typically scotch ale. I love the caramel and the malts. It's light and there is a little booze but still good. The flavor is very similar. There is a ton of caramel and malt up front that moves through a nice solid malt profile out the back. The mouth feel is thinner but pretty good. The aftertaste is lingeringly malty and caramelish. This makes me think of Dirty Bastard a lot, but I just think DB is a bit better. Not bad though ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

his was recommended by a trusted friend, though I then balked at the $12 price tag. I gotta say, it’s pretty much what I think the style should taste like. Sweet, a little peat, toffee, chocolate, tobacco. Nice rich, full feel. A little bubbly, but swirling made it near perfect. 8% just right, warm not hot, full and sweet w/o being cloying. Ever so slight hints, and only hints, of astringency make this just short of elite. Still thoroughly enjoyed."

Quite a malty brew with lots of British character. Toffee, bread, caramel, some creme brulee. Just a quick pinch of smoke up-front. Really well-done, smooth and balanced, not too sweet. Sessionable although the alcohol will sneak up on you.

Bottle from Bruisin’ Ales. Pours dark brown with a half inch of khaki foam. Has some solid peaty malt on the nose. The maltiness on the nose feels subdued. Finishes clean. Solid but not spectacular.
