Brewed primarily for Michael Jackson’s Rare Beer Club, but also available in limited quantities on tap at the Greenwich Union pub.
After India Pale Ale and London Porter the third great British export beer was Scotch Ale. It was brewed at lower temperatures than English ales and cold conditioned for six to eight weeks. Scotland’s remoteness from the hop gardens of Southern England & the softness of the water of the Scottish lowlands made Scotch Ale the world’s finest expression of malt flavour in beer.

US Export - re-imported to the UK by me! Grrrrrr - sort it out Meantime! Very dark brown beer. Smooth and almost silky. Doesn’t feel like aged malts like some Scotch ales. Lots of rich yet light tasting malt. Some chocolate. Not bitter or over dry. A very pleasant malty beer. Some cherry in the undertone.

Bottle from Monument in Concord. In Marcus’ Gordon thistle glass. Very dark, black, opaque with a large creamy beige head. Dark rich aromas of malt, treacle, and perhaps peat. Full bodied with mild carbonation. Dark malt, peaty smoke, absolutely treacle flavors. Finishes towards dry. Treacly, but not sugary. Just improves with consumption. Best Meantime I’ve had to date.

Bottle caged & corked. Poured a dark reddish brown color with an average to large frothy brown head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Medium toasted malt and dark fruit aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy toasted malt sweet flavor with a medium to heavy sweet finish of moderate to long duration. A solid complex brew.

750 ml bottle poured a clear dark reddish brown with a lingering ring of amber foam. Aromas of smoke, carmel, light cocoa and a light hint of coffee. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of carmel, coffee and light smoke with a smooth lingering malty finish.

(750ml bottle) Pours a dark brown body with a medium-sized tan head. Aroma of roastiness, plum, chocolate, and dark caramel. Flavor of toasted malt, dark sour fruit (raisins, plum), light smoke, and toffee.

Bottle shared at a tasting at the Beer & Beyond shop. Murky brown. Aroma of chocolate, cookies, malt and a bit of hazelnuts. Sweetish flavor, malty, with caramel, a bit of chocolate, nutty notes and a drier finish. Medium-bodied. Nice.

750ml bottle-pours a big foamy to rocky light brown head and murky black color. Aroma is wood/grainy, peat/roasty, dark malt-chocolate/slight anise, earthy, slight acidic, dark fruit—prunes. Taste- the tar and ash dominate then the characteristics from the aroma comes out. Thanks to Steve LAK.

Bottle. Pours very dark brown, allowing some light to pass, small fizzy light tan head, little retention or lacing. Aroma is dark malt (chocolate, toast, caramel) with dark fruit (prune, raisin, fig), light yeast and light earthy hops. Flavor is malt focused with dark fruit to balance, little to no hop flavor or bitterness. Full body, creamy palate, and medium carbonation.

Clear chestnut with a small, off-white film head. Aroma has light cellar, caramel, light citrus and port. Medium carbonation, fairly light and rather dry mouthfeel. Flavour has toasted malts, caramel, light cocoa, mild oxidation, plums. Dry and malty bitter finish. Well-balanced.
