COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
330ml bottles and Keg. Formerly known as Meantime Vienna. Also includes Cascade hops as well as those mentioned below.
100 years ago Pilseners, Müncheners and Viennese lagers formed a trio of major lager styles brewed in central Europe. Gradually the lighter Pilseners swept all before them and Vienna style beers fell into an undeserved decline.
Traditional Bavarian Perle and Spalter hops and delicately coloured malts produce a deep copper coloured beer with a firm fruity caramel aroma, a smooth complex malt character and a long crisp clean finish. This beer is slow fermented and cold-matured over long periods to ensure perfect balance and gentle natural carbonation. Union goes with bread and wheat based foods such as pizza and pasta or more mid-weight dishes like duck or noodle stir-fry.

[330ml bottle, The Bottle, York] Pours highly carbonated, swiftly dispersing head with a regular rising carbonation. Clear caramel brown copper colour, little hop aroma. Gentle, subdued flavour - very dry, little hops but some malt to balance out. A smooth easy drinker. The prime character is malt, with a caramel flavour that peters out very quickly indeed and finishes quite thin. It’s a good approximation of a style, but not a great style. Interesting Ray Richardson label. [14062010]

First time I tried this it was quite badly skunked but this one looked a lot better. Classic appearance; darkish brown but with a cola-like clean appearance. Nose shows a nice elegant light chocolate note, maybe a touch of caramel, but definitely not much in the way of hops. Flavours are more more dry, and perhaps there is the mildest astringent hint from some roasted malt. Some bitter chocolate to finish.

Bottle@Home. Light earthy, light herbal, bit fruity, bit malty and even some citrus in the aroma. Not strong but interesting. Brown, beige head, fair lace. Light malty, very bitter - almost grassy - hops, light fruity, hints of toffee. Seems out of balance to me. Thinnish.

Nice balance of hops and malt but a somewhat watery palate. Inoffensive but hardly living up to the hype of the rather overpriced cocktail bar I had this in.

Bottle 33 cl from Bier-Bienne (CH). Very nice copper reddish, small and fleeting collar white-cream, average crackling. Aromas of malt-toffy, stone fruits and kernels. The taste is malty caramel and toasted, rather round, hints of bitterness, nuts and tart tips.

Tap, Brew Wharf. Dark brown, thin white head. Malty with some sour hop, some dry dusty malt. Mouth is malty with roasted malt and some winter fruit. Palate is dry, but not all that descript.
