Commercial Description:
The giants of Mechelen appear in public once every 25 years during the Ommegang. To honour all these giants and to keep the tradition the Brewery "Het Anker", brewers of the real beers of Mechelen, produced a special strong beer; a "Reuzenbier" ("Giant Beer"). Its gold-yellow colour, its high alcoholic percentage, its full and well-balanced taste make this beer a source of vitality and strength and will please the most requiring beer-expert.

200 vintage tasted at the Kulmintor in September 2008. Murky orange with light tan head, surprisingly lively for its age. Aroma of caramel and honey. Full-bodied. Taste of raisins and banana bread. Licorice finish. No bitterness. Mellow.

750mL bottle, 2002 vintage, courtesy of argo0. Thanks, Aaron!! Pours a murky, golden-brown color; light tan head with good retention and fine-bubbled lacing. Very pleasant, generous dry aroma: toasty malts, caramel (plenty of oxidation), and honey; pleasant yeast character. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: chewy bready malts, caramel, honey, and complex yeast; very nice, effervescent feel in the mouth; zesty, crisp and dry; nothing overripe; the oxidation adds a layer of complexity; very pleasantly aged beer. Lengthy finish: pepper, toasty malts, bread, and honey; restrained sweetness at the far end.

(0.75 l bottle at Kulminator on 2008-05-17) Pale amber colour. A bit cloudy. White big head. A bit spicy and clearly fruity nose. Medium bodied palate with some fizziness. Taste is fruity and there are caramell, malts, raisin and liquorice flavours. Really nice.

2001 vintage, labeled "Mechelse Reuzen"
Orange, shady, particle filled look, very small white head. Dry oak, wood, alcohol, sweet and spicy scent. Spicy sweet and dry, but VERY mellow, taste.
WOW, the scent and taste really differ from each other.
A bit sweet licorice aftertaste. Spritzy mouthfeel, low bitterness. Alcohol aftertaste. Taste is also grainy and malty.

Bottled (2002 vintage). Golden colour, small beige head. Aroma is caramel malts, a lot of nuts, some spices, caramel malts, fudge, alcohol, herbs, grass and lots more. Flavour is alcohol, fruits, honey, spices and mild notes of yeast. A complex beer, that has aged really well. Wellbalanced and superb.
