COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Replaced in 2005 by Gouden Carolus Ambrio 6.5%
In the past, every town in Belgium had its own beer typical of the area. Hence, some centuries ago, the people of Mechelen drank a beer known as "Mechelschen Bruynen" or "Mechelen Brown". Our Brewery is the only one still brewing this type of beer. The recipe has its origin at the 14th century. The nowadays version is a little more heavy and contains more hops. The balance between the different malts, the fine hops and typical tastes of spices creates a perfect harmony beween the powerful taste of brown beers and the freshness of the blond beers.

Bottle. Red/brown with a cream head. Aromas are toffee malts with herbs and spices. Quite a lot of alcohol. Flavours are sweet, rich and malty with lots of different herbal aspects. Spicy towards the finish with fairly harsh alcohol.

33 cl Bottle. Light brown coloured beer with a beautiful rocky head. Nice aroma of spice, and the well known aroma from Het Anker. An okey taste, but some dry and it is there missing some balance between alcohol, malt and spice. But not a bad beer. Not filtrated.

Cloudy amber with a huge off-white head. Nice spicey, malty and caramel aroma. Sweet and fruity taste at first turning malty and lightly bitter in the finish. Medium bodied; quite a carbonated mouthfeel. It might be lacking some balance, but still pretty good.

(Bottle 25 cl) Michael Jackson sometimes refers to this as "one of Belgiums secret delights". As soon as you get the cap off you may understand why. This beer has the most wonderful spicy nose. Darkish brown caramel-like appearance. The caramel continous all the way through but never making the beer sticky or cloying. On the contrary it’s fresh and rather dry. And very malty. Quite full-bodied for the low alcohol. 110194
