COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Mauna Kea is an American Pale Ale. The malts and hops are from the Northwest. Actual whole hops are used to give the beer a touch of floral aroma and citrus flavor. Medium copper in color, with a superbly well-balanced hop flavor, it goes well with chicken, pasta, and red meat dishes. It is named for the most majestic mountain on the island.

Tap @ The Hang Ten Bar at Turtle Bay... Poured deep amber with s khaki head. Definitely not your NW pale. Easy drink with lots of malt sweetness and some yeast esters. Hops didn’t really spice more than just balancing the malt. I couldn’t detect any off, infected flavors so kudos for that.

12 oz. bottle. Ar: Mildly hoppy aroma with a bit of spice and some caramel. Ap: Pours a slightly hazy copper with a 1" head that leaves great lace. T: A touch of caramelly malt up front gives way to a slightly spicy hopped finish that is somewhat bitter. P: Medium body with medium carbonation. O: Holy mediocrity batman! This beer is fine, but epicly mediocre.

On tap at the Yard House in Honolulu, HI. Pours a clear, deeper golden-orange colored body with a tint of amber to it. Finger-width, dense and frothy, off-white head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing throughout. Aroma is pretty caramel based, but has a good amount of floral hops. Bready with some oranges, perfume, and a light pine. Flavor is similar. Bready caramels with a moderate sweetness, a good amount of floral oranges, and a light pine. Finishes smooth and dry with a good amount of caramel and a medium-light, floral and piney bitterness that leaves a lengthy aftertaste. Medium, very smooth body and soft, moderate carbonation. Overall, a pretty solid pale ale. Nice balance between a good amount of caramels and a well hopped orange, floral and piney bitterness.

Dogbrick (4531) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - DEC 7, 2010
UPDATED: DEC 9, 2010 Sample at the Mehana Taproom in Hilo. The beer is a clear yellow-orange color with a medium thin off-white head that dissipates to an outer ring quickly. Short stringy lacing. Piney hops aroma with some malt notes. Medium body with a moderately bitter hops flavor that has a piney character. Some malt and citrus in the background. The finish is short with a hoppy aftertaste. Slightly above average overall.
