3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 MoritzF (7835) - Bochum, GERMANY - JAN 13, 2007
(bottle) Clear, amber colour with a fluffy, off-white foamy head. A bit dusty, moderately sweet, minimal sour and roast-malty aroma with caramel and spicy hops in the background. Light-sweet flavour, medium bodied with a well-carbonated mouthfeel. Moderately roasted malty taste with caramel and milk chocolate; dry-ish, malty slightly bitter finish with a delicate blend of herbal hops and a rural barnyard note. Not that much different to the Vollbier, but a bit stronger and eventually a bit more roasty; very pleasant and quaffable, although I prefer the Vollbier which is better balanced from my point of view.

Bottle at Chriso’s Pre-GBBF Shindig, 2012, London. Pours clear, amber-gold with a fine, foamy white head. Bready nose, lots of toasty malts. Medium sweet flavor, big bread, light caramel. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Sweet finish, light toasty cereal, more bread. It’s sweet and basic - it’s a marzen. Fine.

A Mes rate: 50cl bottle at Quinns Rich amber brown with a decent off white head. Corn and cereal aroma with some sweet German malt and a really nice smoky hint. Slight metal and an odd fishy note in the flavour spoils the really nice malt and the light bitterness in the finish. So so.
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 3fourths (7063) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - NOV 22, 2012
bottle, best by date February 2012.
clear rich brick red body with a soft just-white head. striking calcium / mineral water and toasted Munich malt nose with nut oil, toffee and baked bread fun. touches of maraschino cherry and sweet apple show up as it breathes. medium body with an oily and slick texture, very smooth with rich sweet almond cake / amaretto flavored malt. overall it seems very well put-together, though much drier than what I expect (and like) in festbier malt-bombs.

bottle, traded with wastl. Clear chestnut colour with a small beige head. Malty nose. Medium-bodied, flavours of caramel and spicy aromatic hops. Shy hints of bitter chocolate and cocoa powder. Most impressive is the palate, I’ve rarely had a beer with such a pleasant palate. Extremely smooth and velevety yet with signs of liveliness. A delicious beer - a masterpiece, ein Meisterstück.
