Take an India Pale Ale and feed it steroids, ergo the term Double IPA. Although open to the same interpretation as its sister styles, you should expect something robust, malty, alcoholic and with a hop profile that might rip your tongue out. The Imperial usage comes from Russian Imperial stout, a style of strong stout originally brewed in England for the Russian Imperial Court of the late 1700s; though Double IPA is often the preferred name. You can thank west coast American brewers for this somewhat reactionary style. "Thanks!"

On tap, poured a clear golden hue w/ a small white head. Moderate bready and vegetal hop aromas. Initial flavor is light sweet w/ a moderate bitter finish of lasting duration. Tastes are straw, grass, and pungent hop juice. Medium bodied. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Clear golden under a sticky white cap, giving a lovely dank nose of grapefruit pith and pine resin and some fresh hop lupulin oils. Bright flavor thatís a touch grapefruity and piney resinous, and alpha-acidic bitter as hell. But oddly enough thereís a lovely golde/pale ale and English malt body that provides a welcoming sweetness. Donít get me wrong, the hops take my tongue right off but it all coalesces at the end to have a nice boozy sweetness with a little citric pithy bittersweet tone. Bitter and citric/piney as hell but has a nice balance to it. Not exactly toffee or caramel, but itís a nice pale malt sugary booze that holds it in. Interesting and huge.

On tap. Smells strong pineapple. Tastes pineapple, pine, citrus, medicine, alcohol. Hits hard initially then dies off and the aftertaste dissipates quickly. Good but not great due to some medicine taste.

Grunt fill from Albertsons. Hazy golden body with thick fluffy head. Potent piney, hoppy aroma. Taste follows on with a huge hoppy hit, silky, velvety body . All around excellence here, ABV present but not overwhelming. Been a long day, so this really enjoyable.

Draft at The Taphouse in Boise... Pours clear golden... nice foamy white head... Huge piney and pithy citrus with some background allium hoppiness... This one is a monster hop bomb with nice clearly defined hop channels represented.. Pretty dank on the palate.. Maltiness is very present, but dries out very quickly and finishes pretty dry.. Not sweet ever, but perhaps a bit more bitterness would help cut down on the maltiness... Top tier DIPA... Tastes very fresh... Canít wait for the Melvin cans to start showing up.

On tap at Black Bottle Brewery. Hazy light orange appearance with a white head. Dank, resinous hop aroma with pine and light citrus zest. Similar flavor, medium plus bitterness balanced by a moderate malt sweetness. Medium to full body, fairly easy drinking for the style overall.
