| 2.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 4/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Nov 25, 2004 Bottle Pours a solid black with a large fluffy light brown/tan head. Aromas are mostly roasted/burnt malts and a slightly sour woddy note. Flavor is a bitter/sour smokey taste that just doesn’t quite do it. Feel is a bit thin, more like a porter maybe. Carbonation is soft and the trailer is a sour astringent taste. Dissapointing. steve23mj (273), Essexville, Michigan, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 14, 2004 Pours black with smallish tan head. Nose is sweet and vinous. Roasted malt and coffee aroma. Flavor is thick and of chocolate. Smoky biscuity, burnt toast. Balanced bitterness finishes dry and satisfying. beerinmarch (2829), Washington, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Nov 4, 2004 Out of the bottle this pours a very dark brown almost black with a fast falling light brown head. Very roasty coffee aroma, rich and sweet. Taste starts with a quick jolt of dark chocolate, then leads into a rich sweet maltiness which is finished off by a well balanced bitterness. Coffee trails off in the aftertaste. A good smooth stout with a good roasty kick to it. Hab40oz (242), Grants Pass, Oregon, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 3, 2004 pours very dark almost black with a thin layer of creamy head, malty coffe aroma, very nice rich coffee taste with a good chocolate presence as well, well carbonated with some good bitterness to finish, well balanced. | 2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 3/5 | 4/10 | 1/5 | 8/20 | Oct 26, 2004 Reddish black with a thin wisp of a brown head that quickly disappeared. The aroma is a very vague air of thin coffee. Flavorwise, I mostly discern a bitter smokiness. It’s thin and watery, not the best stout I’ve ever had. SpringsLicker (2043), Tennessee, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Oct 10, 2004 Very dark opaque pour with a decent tan head.
The aromas are nice. but subtle. I was hoping they would intensify with some warming. Roast malt, chocolate, some smokyness.
The flavor was not overly sweet, roasty with a dry smooth finish, but a little thin. Not bad, very much on a par with the other Mendocino brews I have had. JK (2968), Richfield, Minnesota, USA
