3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Nice pour from a bottle. Dark, but not thick, with small creamy head. It laces OK. Its got some malts, sweetness of a chocolate, and a hint of coffee. It comes of dry. Not over powering.

Some coffee and roast but ingredients don’t mesh well. Pours black, OK head and lacing. Thick consistently. Kind of an oaky astringent finish. Bottle.

Pitch black stout. Dry and similar to Guinness. Easy to drink, not heavy or sweet. Got a six pack on special and would pick up again.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
An affable Stout to be sure, a thick feeling muddy-black liquid with a tanned noggin. Your usual coffee and chocolate malts with slight whiffs of spiciness, molasses and anise. Hop bitterness finishes off this Hawk with a dry, lingering touch. Not too shabby.

Bottle shared @ weekly tasting. Dark brown to black color, medium sized brown head that leaves fair lacing. Aroma is malts, roasted malts, liquorice, a touch of hops. Pretty nice actually. Taste malts, lightly roasted malts, again liquorice, nicely bitter. Medium body and carbonation. I like it. Nice beer imo.

UPDATED: MAY 23, 2014 Bottle in our appartment, Kanapali Beach Maui, from Wine Corner Paia 25/04/14.
Black with a moderate tan covering that retains well.
Nose is bitter roast, earthy cocoa, slight lactic ring, molasses, dark berry fruits.
Taste comprises light sweet lickings, chocolate dipped raspberries, toffee fudge, dark berry fruit twang, light roast.
Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close.
Ok dry stout, this was the best beer by some way of a mediocre triumvirate from Mendocino.

Transfer from BA rated on 1-28-12 -
Poured from bottle into pint glass
Appearance - Pours a deep deep brown if not black color, with a thin off white head that fades very fast after pouring leaving no lacing.
Smell - Roasted malt with dark chocolate and burnt coffee aroma. A little bit of sweeter caramel and licorice come in toward the end of aroma, but are only very light.
Taste - Burnt coffee and unsweetened dark chocolate. A very faint earthy hoppiness comes in toward the middle of the tasting. Not the slightest bit of sweetness in the beginning, but there is a very little bit that comes in toward the end with faint vanilla flavorings.
Mouthfeel - Quite dry on the tongue with a more watery less creamy taste. Not as good as most stouts on the mouthfeel, a bit too sharp that could use come mellowing of a creamier body feel.
Overall - The beer has some very nice qualities for the style, but then others really put away from its greatness. Overall fairly average
