Black Hawk Stout retains the big traditional flavors of an Irish-style stout and yet offers a refreshing dry crispness that is rare in many dark beers. "Bottle Conditioned" Black Hawk Stout is replete with a rich, roasted malt flavor that makes this not-so-heavy stout, creamy and ever so smooth. It has a subtlety that surprises and converts even the most reticent stout drinker.

UPDATED: JUL 12, 2011 Bottle. Poured a deep dark muddy black with a huge frothy tan head that produced some really good lacing. The aroma was of dark roasted bread malts, a resin hop and a meaty yeast with notes of dark chocolate, coffee and molasses. It tasted a little bitter-sweet with a hint of molasses and chocolate at first and finished with a bitter coffee flavor that had a strong dark chocolate presence at the end. Mouthfeel was very full in body and nice, smooth and creamy texture with a flat carbonation. Overall this stout was exceptionally smooth with a very nice flavor from beginning to end.

12 oz bottle from Tipsy’s. Black appearance with a light brown head. Slowly diminishing with moderate lacing. Pretty mild aroma of roasted malts, dark chocolate and coffee. Similar flavor, roasted malts with a lingering bitter finish, lightly metallic. Average body, creamy and somewhat dry. Eh, OK.

355 ml bottle. Very dark brown body, almost black with a nice finger thick lacing tan head. Nice, relatively strong aroma of mocha, coffee and moderate roasted dark malt. Medium sweet, moderate roasted malt flavor with hint of vanilla and some fruity hops. Medium body and a bit short in aftertaste. Quite nice, drinkable, more than less standard dry stout with nothing extraordinary going on.

12 oz bottle into a pint glass. A: Pours a very dark brown color. There’s about a finger worth of a light tan colored head, also. Retention is about average for the style, but the texturing is very nice. Some decent lacing is left behind. S: The aroma is rather muted, unfortunately. There is a presence of chocolate backed by some brown sugar, and there’s even a touch of hoppiness. As it warms up, it becomes quite caramel-forward...too caramel-forward, actually. T: Actually, it’s hoppier than I anticipated. It tries to have an initial coffee-like flavor to start, but it’s general hop bitterness that I’m picking up the most. That, and a ton of caramel. I’m really missing some of the roasted and chocolaty flavors I get out of other stouts. M: At least it deserves some credit for having a crisp dryness to it. Given that, its light body, and its decent carbonation, it’s pretty easy to drink. O: Not a fan, really. Hoppy stouts need to have a nice backbone of malt and hop flavors, not weak caramel with a ton of generic bitterness. Guess which one this achieves?

Nice stout, with a chocolate/coffee aroma and some herbal whiff as well. Flavour is ok, staying more around the first two, and less herbal/metallic. Carbonation quite high, still nice and dry. Well....not bad.....I must get some sleep...

I stort sett svart öl med lätt beige skum. Doft av malt, lätt rostade toner och lite trä. Samma i smaken. En ganska tunn och blyg stout.

2oz sample at International Great Beer Expo (Meadowlands). Pours a deep brown color with a small tan head. Aroma of light roasted malt and a hint of chocolate. Not much else. Taste of roasted malt, old chocolate, bitter burnt toast, and vanilla.

Bottle at International Great Beer Expo (Meadowlands). Dark brown with reddish tint, beige foamy head, slight caramel aroma, cherry-caramel taste, low carbonation, medium finish. Not bad for a stout, but not great either.

@ Jungle Jims / Eastgate OH - Opaque black with a tan rim head, tiny streaks of lace. Taste is typical stout going in, bitter burnt toast going out. Begins nice and light, seems like a neighbor of Guinness and Murphys, but the finish sends it down the wrong road, leaving a sour taste in the mouth. Not repeatable for me.
