Pours a medium amber with light red hues with a boozy head. Aromas of caramel, fruity hops, candy/dark fruit, cherry, and just a faint hint of alcohol. Flavors of caramel, dark fruits, slight alcohol (not to strong), slight cherry, slight pine hops, slight bread, and slight prune. Leaves a strong bitter aftertaste. Medium sweet. Alcohol hinders (slightly) the other flavors.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 arminjewell (4206) - Fort Collins, Colorado, USA - MAY 27, 2013
8 bucks or 4 bottles, not bad. Pour was dark red with slightly off white head, aroma brought lots of red fruits, caramel, toffee, slight caramel, toffee, earthy tones as well. Taste is a mix of dark caramel, toffee, slight bread, earth, spice notes, more red fruits, finishing sweet, cloying unfortunately, slightly dry. Eh, the alcohol is definitely present, but the sugars in excess cover it up.

Have had this a few times over the years, usually in Trinity County. Light bodied but still flavorful BW.
1.6 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 4/20 OKplus (560) - Oklahoma, USA - MAY 14, 2013
A - Pours a copper brown with a light tan head that sinks into a thin cap of micro bubbles.
S - Heavily roasted toffee, sorghum, brown bread, a mix of dark fruit, raisins, prunes, coffee grinds, alcohol, heavy minerals.
T - Scorched brown sugar, molasses, fusel alcohol, prune juice, some bitter hops, rough mineral finish.
M - Medium body, slick, boozy.
The burnt sugar mixed with hot alcohol creates an unpleasant astringency. This is a miss for me.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle. There are some sweet alcohol notes, caramel, toffee, apricot, some hot alcohol. A big malty beer, the alcohol is not out of place. This may be the best beer I have had from this brewery.

Pours very cloudy/murky...medium brown-orange with a thin soapy cap.
Aroma Is caramel, dark fruit, a little diacetyl tomato/bloody mary-ness.
Taste is spicy, peppered, raisin and dark, sweet fruit.
Increasing pepper and spice.
Really a nice sipper.
Even better as it warms.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 AxlLives (240) - Maryland, USA - APR 3, 2013
12oz bottle- pours clear ruby with minimal white head, mostly diminishing. Roasty dough notes, with vanilla, esters and cereal grain. Bit of plum. Taste is of the same ilk, nice and malty, good complex flavors. Touch of hop dryness at the finish. Lighter bodied. Bit of a burn. I like barley wines, so not quite sure bout the discrimination here against Mendocino.
2.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20 DrSilverworm (2970) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - MAR 18, 2013
12oz bottle. Half hazy darker red/orange/amber color. Thin khaki head. Fades to a minimal ring around the edge. Doesn’t leave any lace. Medium to bigger body. Moderate carbonation, kind of a blunt texture. Sticky texture, too. Big caramel malts, musty old hop smell. Some dark fruit. Sherry. Wet Cardboard. Boiled nuts. Very sweet, somewhat cloying. Not an enjoyable example of the style. Was a challenge to get through.
